Then I read here that the statue is going to be 182 meters and cost around 2000 crores. Isn't this a criminal waste of our resources?

What if the 'monument' was build in a state governed by congress? As U_P said if you make profit out of this, then well and good and if not, its a total F**K up!! I don't give a **** about the monuments of other countries. We have millions of people living in poverty and I believe they would prefer a good medical care or some other helpful institute over a damn statue.

The statue is proposed to be built near the Sardar sarovar dam, which is atleast 70 kms away from Vadodara and at about a similar distance from Surat. Not much habitation in the vicinity. Would you visit the dam just to visit this gigantic statue? Edit: Given that there is absolutely NOTHING to do in Surat, probably yes.

There should be absolutely zero reason to waste money in a third world country like this. There is a lot of money in this country. It is not an apt comparison, but in terms of spending - people have built house worth $ 2 billion(10k crore at that time). People are poor because of reasons well known - corruption, incompetence and apathy of people occupying authority. One shouldn't use poverty as a reason to override spendings in various fields. Some take it to new heights and say India shouldn't invest in space program, in defense etc. There are reasons (already stated) which justify the kind of money that is being spent on this project.
