In this case, Sachin is appointed by UN as brand ambassador. Better reaction would be "what an ambassador :hatsoff:". Good move by UN. Hope Sachin bats his "innings" well for them. Just because other humans are doing good things, should we not praise Tendulkar for doing a good thing? Praising Tendulkar doesn't mean other guys efforts are berated.

Its a huge deal to spend countless hours to do something that is not for your financial or personal gain. Wanna know what I'd do if I had Tendy's money and fame ? I would own my own little tropical island, start a political party or (if I was single), start my own harem. Go gamble at Vegas, buy a trip on board the 'space place' of Richard Branson- jesus man, the world is your oyster when you are a multi-millionaire with billion plus fans. I could spend ten lifetimes experiencing every single material, sensual, emotional pleasure there is to be felt. But this guy is actually putting in time and effort to make a difference to other people's lives and make our society better at no personal gain of his. That is extremely commendable.

Its not quite clear from the article what Tendulkar is supposed to do. Either ways kudos to him. As Muloghonto said, most of us would live lives of luxury if we were in his shoes and not strive for something which brings us no personal gain. Just building new toilets and providing soaps would be insufficient. There has to be drainage too, and that requires a lot of help from the government and/or local municipal body. And why is the UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund) tackling sanitation problems? Shouldn't this be under the purview of the WHO, if at all?

They also do quality control in medicines. like recently we received a new checklist for surgical safety. Unicef also does field work in various areas like food, medicine, safety, sanitation etc,. Sachin is job is to promote and rise emergency funds for various activities. Children are the first to get infected in open toilets. So unicef builds toilets and drainage systems using the funds raused by sachin and many others. btw, Barcelona FC has been supporting unicef for nealy 10 yrs and they even have unicef logo in their jersey. Like sachin, Messi is also an ambassador, but he has done a lot of field work, even b4 retiring.
