Sachin=GOD Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 BJP wants Nana Patekar to contest LS election he Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has offered actor Nana Patekar the Mumbai North-Central parliamentary constituency to contest from in the 2014 general elections. A top BJP leader said that Patekar is not averse to the idea but is yet to decide. "We are in touch with Patekar and are trying to convince him to contest the election on a BJP ticket. His response is positive so far," the leader said. Mumbai North-Central is part of the BJP's quota of seats as per its seat sharing formula with the Shiv Sena. It is currently held by Priya Dutt of the Congress, but the Congress is thinking of fielding Maharashtra Minorities Affairs Minister Naseem Khan from this constituency. A Shiv Sena leader confirmed that Patekar could be a candidate from Mumbai North-Central. "He (Patekar) enjoys good personal relations with the Thackeray cousins, Uddhav and Raj. The late Balasaheb used to attend prayers only at Patekar's house for Ganeshotsav. If Patekar agrees to contest from the NDA, Raj Thackeray might support him," the Shiv Sena leader said. Nana Patekar is already associated with BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi's dream project, the Statue of Unity. He is a member of the project's national coordination committee, which is overseeing the collection of iron pieces from seven lakh people from across the country to build the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel statue. The BJP has been trying to bring Patekar into its fold for the last two years, ever since he discussed politics at length with state BJP spokesperson Madhav Bhandari in 2011. The BJP believes that Patekar, a resident of Mahim, could prove to be a giant killer in Mumbai North-Central. "It is the only tough seat for us this time. We guess that the cosmopolitan voters of Bandra and Mahim will accept Patekar. He is quite popular among the lower middle classes as well, in these areas," the BJP leader said. The constituency comprises around 24% minority votes including 16% Muslims. The NDA could win this seat only once in 1996, after 1989. Shiv Sena's Narayan Athawale had registered a victory then because Congress' Sunil Dutt had not contested the election. The Sunday Guardian sent Patekar a text message asking whether he had shown interest in contesting the Lok Sabha election from the BJP. He replied, "Galat suna hain aapne (What you have heard is not correct)." http://www.sunday-guardian.com/news/bjp-wants-nana-patekar-to-contest-ls-election He's one actor whom I could see as a good politician.
