vvvslaxman Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 Viru’s confusion affected his batting: Chauhan PTI Virender Sehwag’s “confusion with his batting slot†badly affected his game in the current Ranji Trophy season, according to DDCA’s chairman of selectors Chetan Chauhan who on Thursday said the veteran batsman should consider reverting to the opening position. “Make no mistake, Virender Sehwag is a great cricketer. I believe the problem was his confusion with the batting order. He was in a dilemma as to whether to bat at the top or bat in the middle-order and that has affected his game,†Chauhan, a former Indian opener who played in 40 Tests, told PTI in New Delhi. Sehwag has scored 234 runs in 13 innings at an average of 19.50 in Delhi’s disastrous Ranji Trophy campaign having batted at all positions from Nos. from 1 to 6. Asked about what would be the slot where he would like Sehwag to play, Chauhan replied, “I would always like Viru to open the batting. He has scored all his runs opening the batting for India and I believe that he should continue batting at the top of the orderâ€. Chauhan however feels that the “year 2013 wasn’t great†for Sehwag. “I believe Sehwag couldn’t perform as per expectations this season. There were a lot of matches in the year 2013 and the year exactly didn’t go as he would have liked it to be,†Chauhan added. Asked what would be his advice for Sehwag, he said, “I don’t think I need to advice him on technical aspect as he has played 100 Test matches. Anyone who has played those many matches know what they need to do. But yes, I would definitely tell him to work even harder as there is no substitute to hardworkâ€. Although his opening partner Gautam Gambhir has scored more runs (578 runs) than Sehwag, his captaincy for the state team will certainly come under scanner. “I can’t say what will be done but Gautam Gambhir’s captaincy will certainly be discussed when the selection committee meets next to pick up the squad for the Vijay Hazare Trophy (North Zone one dayers),†Chauhan concluded.

ThePhenomenal1 Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 we need energetic players on the field. Doesn't matter if he's 30+, but his issue is that he is slow, can be injured easily and has a 'don't care attitude'

Pagalpanti Posted January 4, 2014 Posted January 4, 2014 Respect for GG just went up after this whole fiasco. We have 2 Indian openers fighting it out to make a come back into the test team. One does all the hard work and doesn't fear playing on green tops keeping team goals in mind, the other finds an easy route for a come back ie. eyeing the middle order spot in Indian team given the recent vacancies. Sehwag has always been about natural talent, his attitude has always been like this. Which is why I think he's done for good. We can only hope that Gambhir sorts out his technical flaws.

Marut Posted January 4, 2014 Posted January 4, 2014 Viru has an outside chance. But he has to start scoring big in the domestic before he can even dream of that. Dhawan's rise has virually sealed Sehwag's fate. Hand-eye coordination players like him rarely make a comeback after a bad slump.

He doesnt want to open anymore and even if there is an issue with either of the openers, Vijay will step in. The middle order is too crowded. Dhoni will persist with Raina since he looks prettier in a skirt than Sakshi!! Pujara, Rahane, Raydu, Binny...waiting for their turn. If there's a slot for a senior comeback then it will be Yuvi not Sehwag. Also Sehwag is not the fittest cricketer out there, hes bit of a liability in the field. He was a decent part time spinner but there wont be much use of one in Aus WC'15. Also Jaddu owns the part time spinner slot.
