Was Sadagoppan Ramesh under utilized?

What do fellow ICFers have to say about Sadagoppan Ramesh? In his short career he looked quite good, including an outstanding series against a great Paki attack in 99 home series. I remember him playing Akram,Saqlain even better than Sachin,Dravid,Ganguly. He looked good in the 99 World Cup also but was left out for no reason after that. Even in the 2003-4 series in Australia I think he top scored in both matches with 80s whereas Aakash Chopra failed, yet Chopra played in the whole series. Do you guys feel Ganguly had issues with Ramesh or was he simply not good enough? Could he have been a long term solution to our opening woes had he been given an extended run in the team?

Ramesh was very good, much better than the Dhawans and Rohits of today. A long time has passed but this is what I remember about what I heard about Ramesh back then. Ramesh once got injured (I think a fracture on his hand or forearm), but declared that he was fit while still recovering. and kept this matter hidden from the coach and the team, so that he could retain his place in the side - and during the drills the coach found that Ramesh was writhing in agony even on a slight touch in his injured part. So it was clear that Ramesh declared himself fit before he really was. Naturally, he went out of favour with the selectors. It was also rumoured then that one of the selectors had pressurized Ramesh to declare that he was fit. The injury controversy shadowed Ramesh for the rest of his career.

Ramesh was one of my favorite batsmen to watch. His first test innings was a pleasing cameo. But his most impressive innings was the 95 or 96 he got against Pakistan in that same series. That innings helped India to win the match and is more valuable than any 100 or 200 scored by other batsmen in easy situations. One of the factors that contributed to selectors developing negative opinion about Ramesh is the non stop comments made by cricket commentators about his lack of footwork. They just couldn't digest the fact that someone could be so unconventional and still be successful. They said the same about Sehwag but he proved them wrong in a most resounding fashion. I wish they had chosen Ramesh as Sehwag's opening partner in that 2003 series against Australia. What a great pair they would have been! Ramesh's career may have ended abruptly but in his career he has played innings he can be proud of.Fans will never forget his artistry and his bravery standing up to the fiercest opposition

+1. That 95 or 96 he scored in that series is one of the best test match innings I have seen. It was a high class innings under pressure and the fact that Ramesh was a rookie at that time makes it even more praiseworthy.

I liked what I saw of him when he first came. He what we call showed immense talent like any new youngster shows when he is first drafted in the team. Though, he didn't show the longevity. This is what went wrong. He alway slooked like scoring, but used to get out caught on the slips. I remembe rit happend few times that my friend back in the days started predicting that he will be caught on slip on Chaminda Vass bowling. And it really used to happen. He was though good enough to represent India and deserved his chances, but really wasn't the most promising player after that. I was a fan of his batting and style of play when he first came. Wish he had showed more consistency. If he was given the amoun tof chances players get today like Rohit Sharma, I am sure he might have been still playing than becoming an Actor.

Actually Ramesh wasnt dropped IIRC .He got injured after the tour to Srl and when returned to fitness we picked Jaffer ahead of him of Eng series based on domestic form .Jaffer flopped miserably and replaced by Bangar mid tour who played really well. Sehwag was established in the meantime as the other opener replacing SS Das . Afterwards he never got a chance which he deserved

Rohit Sharma may be a hack but he will average & score more runs on pitches which Ramesh played with ease. Nohit gets abuse rightly so but he is far better already than ramesh ever was in his career. Thats why I dont rate Dravid high as batsman as other greats, he was below average against good bowling attacks in spite of all his stats except for 2003-04.

He scored some his best knocks against great attacks of sa in his debut series and against aus in 2001 series.There are few attacks that can match aus attack of mcgrath and warne,gillespie.Even english attack of flint off,barmy,haggard was considered a good attack.Our best wins abroad came due to dravid even the perth 90 against lee and johnson helped india win and last series against swan,anderson,broad was a good attack.Yes he should have been a bit more consistent against great attacks of aus but then again they were all-time great attack.

99 series was in India which is a graveyard for fast bowlers. In conditions which assisted bounce' date=' swing and seam movement, he was poor and had no chance of doing well.[/quote'] Dude that 99 Paki attack was one of the greatest attacks to tour India. Dravid and Ganguly were made to look like amateurs by their bowlers. Tendu back then was the greatest batsman in history in my humble opinion and bar 1 innings he too found life tough. All those pitches were result oriented, not highways by any means and Ramesh was the only guy who always looked comfortable playing them. He was a brilliant timer of the ball and played very late, 2 great attributes. In 1 of the interviews back then I remember Akram praising Ramesh a lot and telling that no one had played him that comfortably back then.

If he had gotten 2-3 more series, then we'd have known better about the longevity potential of S. Ramesh, but anyway now its all speculation.

Was looking for it TBH. Sadly did not find it. Was a corker of a ball when Murali was bowling round the wicket. Pitched few inches outside leg and hit the top of the off bail.

talented but like most indian batsmen terrible against pace & swing. we lost the match against Zim in 1999 WC due to is poor shot.
