"I am happy that he (Gavaskar) said I am capable of doing the job. But the job requires a lot of time, almost 11 months a year. I have just retired and at the moment because of time constraints, I have to decline (the suggestion)," said Dravid at a promotional event on Friday. "For me, Duncan Fletcher would get 1.5 in a scale of 10 as far as his success is concerned. I believe a younger guy should be appointed as the coach of the Indian team," Gavaskar had told a TV channel a few days ago. "Rahul Dravid is one man who is enormously respected and was a successful captain, having won series in West Indies and England. When he speaks, the Indian players, some of whom are superstars, listen to him as they know how much preparation went into his game," Gavaskar added. Dravid, however, did not totally rule out the possibility of taking up the job in future. "I am going to perform a different role (mentor) for Rajasthan Royals this year in IPL. Who knows what lies in store in the future," said the 41-year-old former batsman who amassed over 24,000 runs from 164 Tests and 344 ODIs before retiring last year. Dravid expected the Cricket Board to continue with the current support staff comprising Zimbabwean Fletcher, bowling and fielding coaches Joe Dawes and Trevor Penney, respectively, at least till the end of the next World Cup in March 2015. "With the World Cup less than a year away I don't think there would be any changes in the support staff of the team. Ideally, they should be given a four-year period to change things. There is no point of changing the leadership ahead of the World Cup," said Dravid.

Austin 3:!6 Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 History suggests we have never done well with Indian coaches. Kapil, Gaikwad etc. were all failures. Our 2 greatest coaches were foreigners - Wright & Kirsten. Might be a coincidence but I would not make any Indian coaches.

Look at England, Collingwood and Giles, players 6-7 years ago have attempted their hand at coaching. South Africa have Kirsten and Donald. Australia have Langer Lehmann in the crop that played a decade ago. NZ have had Crowe Flemming (though in IPL) etc. To be fair to Dravid he is the Rajastan Royals coach all but in name. I want atleast one of Sachin Dravid Ganguly Laxman and Kumble to get into management full time. Even Zaheer khan needs to call quits and become a bowling coach. The only Indian coaches I can think of based on players who represented India say 30 times in total in all formats put together are Venky Prasad and Robin Singh. Being a freaking commentator is not going to do any good. Pass the knowledge along.

Indian cricket went through bit of a purple patch in the mid 80s and there was no foreign coach.
G_B_ Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 And speaking of Indian coaches. India should have hired Sandeep Patil as a coach. After what he did with Kenya in 2003 he should have been the first in line after Wright. But there seems to be a line of thinking that foreign especially white = good.

Its different to coach an affiliate nation like Kenya and to coach India. If I have to pick Indian coach...it must be Ganguly, specially when he is ready to do it :agree:

You cant start from India. It somehow worked with Kirsten, does not mean its going to work all the time.

Not only did he save and win matches at home, his success rate in foreign conditions was even more remarkable. With a world of experience under his belt, many, including the legendary Sunil Gavaskar, reckon he is the ideal man to replace the struggling Duncan Fletcher as the coach of the Indian team. Dravid, as he so often did in his playing days, has chosen to leave this one outside the off-stump. "I am happy and honoured that Sunil Gavaskar thinks I am capable of doing the coaching job of the Indian team. It is very nice of him to say that," Dravid said during a promotional event on Friday. "But I have only recently retired from international cricket and already have commitments with the Rajasthan Royals. Of course my role with the Royals is different and it requires my attention only for a couple of months. Coaching Team India, though, is a full time job and it will require me to devote at least 11 months a year. At this point in time, it is extremely difficult for me to devote that kind of time," he added. The former India captain, however, said he wasn't averse to the idea of coaching the India 'A' team or the Under-19 side sometime in the future. "Who knows, someday, sometime in the future after few years and time permitting, I would love to work with the Under-19s or India 'A' on shorter tours. But really, the India coaching job — unfortunately at this point of time — is something I cannot do," Dravid said. Gavaskar had recently criticized Fletcher by saying he would give the Zimbabwean only 1.5 on a scale of 10. But Dravid felt that with the World Cup less than a year away, the flag bearers of Indian cricket would not want to make any changes. "With the World Cup nearly a year away, it is unlikely that India will change its coaching staff and support staff. maniac Posted March 15, 2014 Posted March 15, 2014 Dravid is not a guy who takes initiavie...SRini+DHoni combo will walk all over him.....First it was Dada,then it was Chappell...He needs a RR kind of environment where they hand over most cricketing matters to him...don't see that happening with BCCI

New BBCI president New India coach New India captain That's my wish list Funny thing in the above 3. Our coach is least culpable for our misery, as the indian coach has zero power and makes no calls. Yet in classic stupidity the indian fan falls for the trap and goes after the coach
