We do not have any good slip fielder. Going by our slip catching success ratio over past 4 years or so, i am expecting at least 2 dropped catches in slips every innings. Having failed to even have one quality slip fielder, there is no way we can have a reliable established slip cordon in next couple of years.
They are all made here on the ground. No one is born with slip catching tag. If team management works with players, there is no reason why they cannot get better.

If team management works with players' date=' there is no reason why they cannot get better.[/quote'] These cricketers play at least 14 years of lower level cricket even if you consider they make international test squad at age of 22. So even if they are not born with slip fielding abilities 14 years are good enough to learn slip fielding. if you are aware of the various slip fielding techniques they are so cheap that any cricketer can afford them and learn even if they put reasonable amount of time for slip fielding practice. Teams like Australia put Cameron White into the slip position as soon as they debut and he gives a feeling that he is better than some slip fielder who has been in slips for over 100 tests. Slip fielding is just like another skills which is practiced in grass root cricket, Under 19,under 22, A teams, FC cricket. They can get better by fielding in slips, but can India afford them to drop catches just for the sake that they will start learning slip fielding at international cricket? No, we are doing bad overseas and we just cannot afford to lose more matches due to fielding.

The reason is fielding has not been given that much importance in India, cannot to compare to Ausrtalians. Most of these guys have fielded in slips for their FC teams. Take an example of Yusuf Pathan or a Wasim Jaffer. They regularly do slip duties for their teams, but they still drop catches even there. Right now, we have no option, but prepare them hard. It is not too difficult. Guys like Dhawan, Rahane, Rohit, and Vijay, must be worked upon regularly. I dont count Kohli as he is one of the most unreliable Indian catchers even in outfield. He has his extremes.

Now i agree with you about that point being the real cause of not having good slip fielders.

Even if our attack creates a lot of chances with the new ball there is no one to catch in the slips....Aswhin,Kohli etc all suck with their slip fielding.....Jadeja and Rahane are 2 our best and most athletic fielder,so not sure if they should be at first slip. Also Lazy Dhoni will leave a lot of chances to slips even when most good keepers would go for them.....This makes slip fielding all the more important for Indian team.
Yes, our slip fielding is dire. Of the current lot, pretty much Rohit and Ashwin can be the only decent options. This is actually one aspect where i desperately wish Sehwag would find some form and back into the Indian team- he remains, by quite some margin, our best slip fielder and overall, a competent one at that.

His opening partnership with viru was responsible for our series loss in England and Australia. They never gave a decent start and could not negotiate new ball to save their lives.Pokemon should improve his technique before he wants to wear India colors. As of now' date=' dhawan and vijay are here to stay whether you like it or not[/quote'] Viru missed the first few England tests through injury, was rushed back and got 2 ducks in the 1st test he did play i think.

Raina is very good at slips but unfortunately' date=' he cannot make the team. He held on to some good catches in CT. Ashwin can be good too, but needs to get fitter and more practice. He too had some good catches in CT. His catch in final of Cook was very good.[/quote'] I beleive Raina has played most of his tests when VVS/Rahul were still around....Also Slip fielding in ODI and T20's is not a barometer.......Attention Span and patience is a very important aspect of slip fielding,so not saying Raina is not capable, but just hasn't proven enough....Just like in LOI's one can go with a make-shift keeper, same thing can happen with a slip fielder.. Ashwin also hasn't done much to prove himself.

Sehwag afaik wasn't that good in his last few tests in the slip,His eyesight being another problem,

Disagree with OP. To get the slip fielders into play you need a good fast bowler to deceive the batsmen first.
So when people are talking about catches which were DROPPED, that means no chances were created? You have turned into a low grade troll

Can't remember a test where india played with 5 bowlers. don't think that is ever going to happen. 6 + 4 is guaranteed.
Indian fast bowlers (if you may call them that) are genuine tailenders. We need to have some bowlers who are a decent bat(apart from ashwin), to play 5 bowlers. Till then 6+1+4 is the right combination.

No need of a fast bowling all rounder. We already have Ashwin and Jadeja who can together contribute for a proper no. 7 batsman. This will allows 3 pacers and 2 spinners. England struggles again spin so this combination will be good IMO.

No way is the Indian team management going to play two spinners in England, that too at the expense of a batsman. Never seen Dhoni go with anything other than the usual 7+4 combination, especially in away tests.
