Tibarn Posted October 18, 2016 Posted October 18, 2016 http://indianexpress.com/article/business/economy/gst-council-decides-on-compensation-for-states-four-slabs-for-rates/ Quote A four-slab structure of 6, 12, 18 and 26 per cent with a cess on the highest band for ultra luxury and demerit items like tobacco being levied was discussed. Food items are proposed to be exempt from the tax and 50 per cent of the items of common usage will be exempt to keep the inflation under check. The lower rates would be levied on essential items and the highest for luxury and demerit goods.
Tibarn Posted October 26, 2016 Posted October 26, 2016 India only improves 1 spot in the Ease of Doing Business ranking over last year. PM needs banish his best friend Jaitley or end up with egg on his face. There is no way to get to top 50 in EODB when you put a Socialist as FM.

Tibarn Posted October 29, 2016 Posted October 29, 2016 Good livemint article on the EODB rankings http://www.livemint.com/Opinion/iwNkJN2L8QFtJIZCB2bJtI/Ease-of-doing-business-Indias-brush-with-reality.html Quote t recognizes reforms under four of the 10 headers—a press release by the ministry of commerce and industry said this is the highest number achieved yet by India—it ranks all economies on. The “distance to frontier” (DTF) score—used by the World Bank to measure the distance between each economy and the best performance in that category—has improved for seven of those 10 headers. The report especially lauds India for achieving significant reductions in time and cost to provide electricity connections to businesses. But for all of this, India has moved up just one notch—from 131 to 130—in the overall rankings. ... Second, one particular change in the ranking methodology seems to have done considerable damage to India’s improvement prospects. The World Bank has included a new criterion “postfiling index” under the header “paying taxes”. Used in the report to measure the efficiency of “processes that occur after a firm complies with its regular tax obligations”, the post-filing index is a criterion in which India finds itself fourth from the bottom. Only Afghanistan, Timor-Leste and Turkey fall behind. ... First, some of the reforms undertaken missed this year’s bus—this report accounts for reforms which had been implemented by 1 June 2016. Indian officials are now expecting a bounty in next year’s report. ... Three, these rankings cover only the two cities of Delhi and Mumbai. A ranking of states last year showed the states of Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh leading the charts in implementing business reforms. Therefore, India’s overall position may well be better than what this latest report shows. There is also a lesson here that India should not just go for the ticking-the-box approach. The government should implement reforms at the Centre and encourage all the states to do the same even if many of them will not be counted in the World Bank rankings. Some important points bolded, but do read the entire article. That one point is absolutely bizarre: they only measure EODB on Delhi and Mumbai! That makes absolutely no sense. We need the central government or the World Bank to do the analysis on an Indian state level in comparison to foreign countries. That would be more useful than just on the basis of Delhi and Mumbai. Tibarn Posted November 2, 2016 Posted November 2, 2016 1 hour ago, sarchasm said: Jaitley isn't a socialist, he is simply uninterested and a little incompetent in economic matters. He is also someone who's embedded in the status-quo-ist Lutyen elite who seek power for personal aggrandizement, instead of effecting real change. I mean, fair enough, I don't think he is ideologically anything in economic terms, let alone socialist, but I am only judging him by his actions as FM. tweaker 1

Mariyam Posted November 25, 2016 Posted November 25, 2016 (edited) ^^^ Well, the oil prices have been at their lowest for 2 odd years now. Works in the favour of the Modi sarkar as increasing oil prices have a huge effect on inflation. This is an untrained observation from someone not well versed in economics. mishra Posted November 25, 2016 Posted November 25, 2016 (edited) Dear Modi, Just like demonetization, Can you please come up with some radical step to cleanse Police force of various states. Although Police force is under state jurisdiction but at the end,ask any Indian, he will call corrupt Police and its detestable behavior as one of the biggest issue they face in daily life. Most Policemen are considered as goons in uniform who are working for local politicians, or people with money, or working for black money. Edited November 25, 2016 by mishra

There may have been high oil prices during his PM-ship but that doesn't explain his entire career of high inflation, especially as RBI governor. Also, no one claimed that oil prices aren't a contributor to inflation, but for someone touted as a great economist, he couldn't even minimize damage to something like 6% inflation. Look at 2009 when oil prices fell and yet there was still 10+% inflation. So the great economist murdered economic growth and allowed rampant inflation. tweaker 1

Tibarn Posted December 17, 2016 Posted December 17, 2016 http://swarajyamag.com/insta/for-the-first-time-in100-years-indias-economy-surpasses-that-of-united-kingdom Quote Rapid growth in India over the past 25 years and decline in the United kingdom (UK) following the Brexit vote has resulted in India surpassing UK’s economy. At current exchange rates (16 December), UK’s 2016 GDP of GBP 1.87 trillion converts to $2.29 trillion, whereas India’s GDP of Rs 153 trillion converts to $2.30 trillion. While some may conclude that the sorpasso is a result of fluctuation in the value of the pound following the Brexit vote, which is partially true, it is important to note that future prospects of an economy have a direct bearing on the value of its currency in the international market. Therefore, it should be concluded that the Indian economy enjoys better growth prospects. As the Indian economy continues to grow at 7 to 8 per cent per annum, compared to UK’s growth rate of 1 to 2 per cent, the gap is expected to widen. India’s per capita GDP still remains less than one-fifth that of the UK.
Tibarn Posted March 29, 2017 Posted March 29, 2017 https://www.csis.org/analysis/reducing-trade-trust-deficit Quote Reducing the Trade Trust Deficit March 27, 2017 India’s deficit in goods trade continues to decline. The country’s goods trade deficit for Fiscal Year (FY) 2017 will likely reach around $105 billion, down from $118 billion in FY 2016 and $137 billion in FY 2015. India is thus poised to have consecutive years of a strengthening balance of goods trade for the first time since the 1991 reforms. International businesses hope that this trajectory results in the Narendra Modi government warming up to trade integration.
