In tests, all pacers averaging 85 mph or 137 kph and higher, are Fast.

Among pacers who play tests regularly ( not the Mark Wood types ), very few have averaged above 140 kph in tests.

< 145 is fast medium and slower.

By your logic if they struggle to hit 137k then <137 will be branded as fast.

My impression is that medium pacers have  average speeds of  129 k to 133 k or 80 mph to 82 mph.

So 80-82 is medium pace and over over 85 is fast?and medium fast and fast medium?

nandre burger was billed as some superstar express pacer. he is a grand total of 1.8 kmph faster than bumrah. 137 to 138.8 ish

prasidh was the quickest in the match at 139.

have checked all average speeds of starc cummins and hazlewood etc as well.

even at their peaks.

starc used to be 145 on average. now 141/2.

cummins is 136 137 max on average

hazlewood is 134 135.

I think this range varies a bit based on the format. Usually bowlers go flat out in T20's, but they bowl within themselves in Tests...hence a little bit of leeway is given in Tests as it's tough to maintain that

Anyway, for me

1. Avg speed of 130 (speed range of 125-135) is medium fast pace.

2. Avg speed of 135 (speed range of 130-140) is what I consider as fast medium.

3) Avg speed of 140 is what I consider as Fast

4) 145 or Above is Express

Anything averaging less than 130 in Tests is medium pace/trundle.

thats correct

140 to 145 is fast for me

145 plus is express.

all these tait, akthar and lee bowling 150 plus is cause of extreme long run ups and even they were around 145 on average for the most part.

Yup, add Wood & Nortje to that list.

Even MJ for a brief period was borderline express, was hitting 150k and bullying the English batters with his sheer pace. Even a player with exceptional ability like Kevin Pietersen was finding him tough to negotiate.

Over 153k is express.

Fast is 10ks quicker than that screenshot, avg around 149k with top speed of 153k notwithstanding speedometer errors. That kind of pace might be difficult to maintain but it is what can rush batsmen at this level.

He is talking about average speed over a Test match.  Nobody bowled 153 k average speed in a Test innings - not even Akhtar and Lee.

Johnson was definitely express in that season. 145 average and deliveries in the 150-155 region.

Starc was express for a long time. Not every series but in 2018-19 India tour of OZ, he averaged 147 kph .

For me,

Medium fast - 130 to 135 regularly with effort spells upto 140 kph

Fast medium - 135-140 regularly with effort spells upto 90 mph

Fast - 140-145 with effort spells clocking 150

Express - averaging 90 mph and peaking  upto 155 kph or more.

Broad categories though. Someone like Steyn was between fast and fast medium depending on rhythm and conditions and occasionally express especially early in his career.

That sort of average isn't that usefull,if someone bowls a few quick overs and then goes down in pace then it should be seen in that context.

Point is, if likes of Lee or akhtar aren't clocking atleast over 145(again given that the speedometer is correct) then they aren't bowling quickly.

STEYN was never express

his average speed even in his peak and i have watched most of his games at his best between 2008 to 2012 was around 137 to 139 max. in his spells however, during his 3rd or 4th spells when the pitch got flatter he would come out and bowl 140 to 150 at times. not often though. its on occasion.

Steyn was express in shortish spells. These are few and far between.

2006 vs NZ when he clocked 155 kph.

2016/17 tour of Australia before injuring his shoulder.

A spell or 2 in Perth 2012/13.

They were rare and I won't say he was an express bowler overall but those spells do exist.

Also until his 2009 injury , he was definitely more fast than fast medium.

2010 onwards the average speeds started dipping to around 137/138 kph

There have only been 3 pacers who can be branded as Express

Lee, Akhtar and Tait

If you add Thompson it becomes 4

Bond came close but those 3 were ridiculously fast

Yea. I mean in average they were 145. But they will ball some spells of 150 to 155

Someone bowling with an avg pace of 145 will have ability to clock 150+

Also, no one can bowl at 150k in Tests consistently, they will naturally bowl a low 140's or late 130's without even knowing as the body will tire up.

Fast & Express bowlers are known for their ability to crank up when needed, MJ was scaring the English batters even with his 143-144k deliveries because they knew he can slip in a 153k rocket at any point of time. Steyn was another who will bowl 130-135 with new ball but will crank 145-147k with old one, hence was regarded as a Fast bowler.

due to various reasons..the speed when ball reaches batsman will be different..so say a skiddy bowler at avg 140k will be faster to the batsman as compared to regular 145k bowler...

I saw in some match where they were measuring...Shoaib's bowl when it uses to reach the batsmen was around 130k whereas other average bolwers were like 120s..so I am more interested in whats teh speed when it reaches the batsmen..however

we can generalize that 150k bolwer will be faster than 140k bowler..

Steyn was express. He did bowl over 150's in the first half of his career. Somebody bowling above 145, and with the kind of quality and control that Steyn had, would anyway be a difficult affair for any batsman. Thats why Steyn is an all time great. His nos speak for themselves.
