Speeds and Performances of Pacers and Spinners

I think our friend doesnt understand the difference between average speed and peak speed.

If Shoaib akhtar bowls 10 overs, and bowls 10 balls at 155, 10 balls at 150, 10 balls at 148, and 30 balls at 140; his average pace would still be 145. Which is only 6 kms faster than Prasidh Krishna!

That means someone with average speed of 139k's has been maintaining a majority of spells above 140's. That is sharp for a longish spell.

So 80-82 is medium pace and over over 85 is fast?and medium fast and fast medium?

Medium pace and Medium Fast are basically same.

Average speed of 83 mph to 84 mph or 134 k to 136 k is Fast-medium.

I think fast medium would be someone who bowls around 140's with capability to bowl at 145 occassionally. But regularly around 135-140.

Ok, you were talking about average pace of 84-85 mph is fast medium. Which could be correct. Yes, around 84-86mph can be.

STEYN was never express

his average speed even in his peak and i have watched most of his games at his best between 2008 to 2012 was around 137 to 139 max. in his spells however, during his 3rd or 4th spells when the pitch got flatter he would come out and bowl 140 to 150 at times. not often though. its on occasion.

I watched Steyn steaming in Centurion 2010...  And bowling over 90mph to SRT.  One of his most hostile spells.

When in rhythm dude looked seriously quick & pounds the pitch very hard.

Cummins and Rabada averaged 86 mph in tests in 2018 and both were thought to be very fast then.  And their % of deliveries above 145 k or 90 mph were not that high even then in tests.

Starc averaged 88 mph in tests in 2018 when he was Express.

All this was Cricviz data.

Which is why I beleive the Fast-medium pacers would be averaging 83 mph to 84 mph.

One 2 spells sure. His average at the end of the day would still be sub 139

Someone bowling with an avg pace of 145 will have ability to clock 150+

Also, no one can bowl at 150k in Tests consistently, they will naturally bowl a low 140's or late 130's without even knowing as the body will tire up.

Fast & Express bowlers are known for their ability to crank up when needed, MJ was scaring the English batters even with his 143-144k deliveries because they knew he can slip in a 153k rocket at any point of time. Steyn was another who will bowl 130-135 with new ball but will crank 145-147k with old one, hence was regarded as a Fast bowler.

145k avg pace is fast but 149k avg is genuine fast,145k is the minimum requirement to be considered fast.

Because half the deliveries are at 140,that's why avg pace is just about fast not genuine fast.

Let's not put the cart before the horse, these days we don't have likes of Lee and akhtar but let's not reduce the requirement to well <145k

You have increased the benchmark for medium pace but reduced it for quicks,as a result we have a bunch quickish medium pacers and not so quick fast bowlers.

And you had to get rid of medium fast as you can't fit them in.

To be honest, I did hear about some fast bowlers who averaged 149k's in Tests. But those bowlers are on mars.

In that case there are no genuine fast bowlers, only overs or spells.

@MediumPacer The matter of fact is there is no defined speed categories to tag a bowler Fast, Fast Medium or Medium Fast. Broadcaster's perception matters a lot for such tagging of bowlers.

Bhuvi operating at 132ks is a medium fast but Cummins operating at 135ks is fast. Even in the past an over the hill Waqar operating at 128ks used to be tagged as Fast but Srinath at 140ks was a Fast Medium.

All this discussion about speed ranges is futile. If you perceive Prasidh at 139k as Fast Medium and Burger at 138k as Fast, that's fine.

For me it's simple,if it's over 145k it's fast,next comes the amount, if it's a few balls or overs.

I don't know what medium fast is. Even Fast-medium is a recent classification used in the last 30 years or so.

Truly speaking, Fast bowling is a style of bowling and not just about release speeds. It is more about the ability to extract life out of pitches.

As Imran once said, Fast bowlers are those who hit the pitch hard and hurry batters. (  Even their fuller balls are bowled into the pitch and not floaty ). While medium pacers are those who float the ball up. These were the only 2 classifications earlier.

Cummins and Rabada are treated as Fast bowlers even if they release the ball at 130 k. They can pound the pitch hard and hurry batters even at those release speeds.

Agree..Cummins, Steyn, Umesh type of bowlers just pound the pitch a bit more than others at the time of releasing the ball.. its not a smooth action like Shami or Anderson

Since thats's your excuse about medium fast then do you know about scoop shot  or reverse sweep or powerplays?

Yeah right ,you have filled up this thread with speeds ,and you say it's not about release speed lol

If fast bowling is not about release speeds  then dont oppose guys who have low release speeds ,lets's see.
