It's a known fact... Congress wanted to use Tendus popularity to garner votes... Tendu wanted few things in return... Good that Indian public saw through these plans and voted for development & prosperity... :nice:

There were rumors that RaGa wanted Sachin to share stage with him during some campaigns. So with that vested interest in mind, Congress might have taken the decision. Bharat Ratna is anyway a joke, Sachin is beyond it.

The institution of "Bharat Ratna" was initiated by the GoI to commemorate and thank all those who have had meaningful contributions to Indian society. Much later (for political reasons) for excellence in sports and performing arts also became reasons to confer the Bharat Ratna. If one were to think rationally, Dhyan Chand shouldn't get the Bharat Ratna under any circumstance. For one, Dhyan Chand didn't really win his multitude of medals for India but for British India. His team mates included many British officers/soldiers and children of British servicemen and/or administrators born in India. I am not doubting the man's sporting genius but he wasn't really representing India. What is Dhyan Chand's legacy? Do we have people trying to emulate him? Truth is, he and hockey, have been relegated to a mere foot note in contemporary history.

The fact that Dhyan Chand played in the British era isn't his fault. We don't categorize Indians from the British Era as non-Indians. For example- CV Raman won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1930 during the British Rule. He was still conferred the Bharat Ratna in 1954. There is no doubt on CV Raman's "Indian association". Also, all this point about Bharat Ratna being for "India" is a bit OTT given that Nelson Mandela , Mother Teresa and Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan. The Dhyan Chand legacy was that India were one the best (if not the best team) in hockey till the late 70s (until hockey was shifted to Astro Turf). He should have been awarded the Bharat Ratna back then itself. In another 100 years, if cricket were to be "relegated to a footnote" it wouldn't mean that Tendulkar's Bharat Ratna was useless.

Technically, neither has Sachin represented India. He has represented the BCCI, a private body.

Dhyanchand was a MUCH MUCH MORE deserving candidate for the Bharat Ratna. He is often considered the greatest player to have played Field Hockey (equivalent to a Bradman in cricket) and more importantly, he helped India win multiple Olympic Gold Medals and have a team believed to be invincible. What has Sachin really achieved in a team sport? Some personal milestones for himself? And probably just a few for the team..... His contribution is nothing more than a Gavaskar, Kapil or a Dravid. Even Vishwanathan Anand deserves a Bharat Ratna more than SRT.

Sachin is being given the Ratna not just for sporting excellence and numbers. It is because he as a sportsperson inspired the greatest number of people in this country, was and still is a great role model, influenced a lot of youth and also many of the present team were inspired into cricket because of him. You have just seen the negative side of his fans through social media, but he has been a very good role model for many youth. None of the others you have named have come anywhere close to this except Dhyanchand Once again, a Bharat Ratna is not just for excellence in one field. It is how you shape the nation and are a voice and representative of it. Sachin has been one of the biggest icon and ambassadors both at home and internationally for India and also has been the symbol of a generation for a very long time
