Dhawan may or may not return improved later but India need to try something to try wrestle back the momentum before England run away with it.

Fontaine Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Changes aren't going to matter. We were out batted and out bowled in this test match. England were not only the better side but a much better side in all the important areas. Their front line bowlers were far better, their top order batted with a lot more judgement. That's not going to change by bringing in Gambhir who has literally, no friggin' idea how to play outside his offstump against the moving ball. Ashwin should play but isn't going to be a big factor and guys like Varun Aaron/Pandey instead of Shami are vastly inexperienced. The only way we improve is if the players themselves start playing better instead of expecting changes in the team to make them better.

Exactly. We have always won when we were aggressive. 2007 series. Ishant and Jadeja get a lot of stick. But last match both played aggressively and produced results. I have no doubt a lot of defensive approaches of players like Ashwin iand Ishant is entirely due to Dhoni. And then when things do not work out they are the first ones to be blamed

The defensive approach on the 2nd day and late in the first was the result and not the cause. The cause is simple and always has been. It's not about talent, it's about front line players (top/middle order batting, front line bowlers) playing up to their abilities. We don't have a match winning player in the squad that we can bring in who's going to make that much of a difference but that being said changes need to be made. In Lords we did the basics right more often than England did and that allowed us to be in a competitive situation going into the last day were we got one excellent spell of bowling that changed an advantageous position to a winning one. The same needs to be done in the next test match. Compete for every single session by first and foremost not making school boy errors like dropping simple catches in the slips, playing stupidly because you lose concentration after a good start in your innings, and not being able to bowl simple consistent line and lengths at the start of each of your bowling spells.
