Its not an isolated phenomenon From what i read, the uk case was about human trafficking and prostitution and has nothing do with marriage and conversion. The kerala case seems more closer to my second explanation than any grand plan to lure hindu girls to islam.

All muslims youth got together for a secret meeting and decided, instead of trying to find love and acceptability, they should dress up, flash bikes and cell phones, attract hindu girls just so that they can convert them and fulfill their holy duty? Or is it the case that a lot of married men in india, though they may marry for love, think they own the girl they marry and the girl is expected to adopt a new identity and a new family after marriage and let go of her past, and one of the manifestations of this problem in islamic society is asking for conversions? The first explanation sounds like a lol worthy b movie plot, the second definitely is a problem and we should all get together to solve it. It's not black and white. You'll find the answer lies somewhere in between. Take your second explanation and add the fact that the man concealed his religion before marriage and tortured the girl because she refused to convert, and what do you have? Is this just a person "in love" who wants a new identity for his wife?
