Crookbond Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 Wow, so he was able to prevail over the captain and coach and get a declaration postponed so individual contributors reach their respective personal milestones. No wonder this guy didn't want Chappell in the dressing room. There was no way Chappell was going to heed that kind of advice. And neither of them could score 100s - Gambhir was out on 97 and Yuvraj on 86. :haha: Interestingly, Dhoni did mention this that "we" wanted Yuvraj/Gamghir to score centuries. Basically, he covered up for Tendulkar. 'We wanted them to score their centuries' - Dhoni http://www.espncricinfo.com/indveng/content/story/384073.html "It's not always so easy," he said after the game. "There was not much wear and tear [in the pitch]. We were leading the series 1-0 and it wasn't 100 percent sure that if we put them in to chase, we'd get them out to win the series 2-0. At the same time, we saw the importance of Gauti [Gautam Gambhir] and Yuvraj's batting on in the match. We wanted them to score their centuries. Nice op-ed on the declaration too. http://www.espncricinfo.com/indveng/content/current/story/384057.html It came down to priorities. What mattered more? The chance, however slim, to win a Test match? Or utterly meaningless second-innings centuries for two of your batsmen? Of course, they would have mattered to Gambhir and Yuvraj, who have just seven hundreds between them, but in the context of the game, they would have meant nothing. Only someone obsessed with statistics would consider such a hundred worthy of consideration. Those that know anything about the game would tell you how a match-turning 83 [sehwag in Chennai] is infinitely more valuable. It's a shame that a team that has encouraged such selfless cricket fell into the selfishness trap in Mohali. Dhoni himself cares little for personal milestones. Time after time, when quick runs have been needed, he has come in and sacrificed his wicket in their pursuit. That attitude must permeate right through the team.

Now this puts me off. I would even accept it if he'd felt that there was a chance to win the game and also allow the batsmen to score centuries. Would put that down to just miscalculation. What's appalling is him saying that there was no way they could've won the test. Wow. That's some mindset to have in a test match. Even if there's a slightest chance of winning, I'd take it over allowing players to achieve personal milestones.
jusarrived Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 “But then, a little more than half an hour into the post-tea session, Ramesh Powar, who was substituting in the game came on the field and asked me to accelerate. I even joked with him, saying I was aware that we needed quick runs but with the field totally spread out, there was only so much we could do”, People compplain when Tendulkar is critisized , but isnt the above annoying ? The guy at the other end is able to hit boundries , while he was safely getting close to his personal milestone ? Hes still crying that dravid declared early?

Dhoni was our captain then and Gary Kirsten our coach. I said that I had been in this situation before and did not want a repeat of what had happened to me. There was no way we could win the game by putting the English in after lunch. There was not enough time – particularly because on each day so far, play had finished early because the light in Mohali did not last long and the last day was expected to be no different. In such a situation, what was the point of declaring and depriving the two batsmen of the chance to get their hundreds? God!!! That is in the book? Shocking !!!

Almost everyone knew we can't win that 2 match vs england becoz of weather conditions . It was a 2 test series and we were already 1-0 up.It was common sense to let these two have batting practice before a tough NZL series away Not sure why the sudden reaction now as if anything new . Kumble once let declaration delayed in the Bangalore test vs Pakistan so that Dinesh Karthick could score a 50.That decision actually cost us the test unlike the England test.

Batting practice in India before a "tough" series in NZ? India was 367 ahead and Gambler + Yurvaj played only 10 overs. As for the Pakistan test, Kumble was criticized and there's no way to know if India would've won even if there was extra time. Just like you'd have no way to know if England would've crumbled here.

SLICKR392 Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 God!!! That is in the book? Shocking !!! Those are just harsh lines if its in the book. Get. ****ing. Over. It. Multan thingy might be in every page probably!
maniac Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 So Rahul Dravid was upset at SRT slowing down really? As far as I know Dravid might have debuted under Azhar in England, but SRT was the captain immediately after that series...I beleive it was a tourney in Sharjah where even Sunil Joshi made his debut....anyways Dravid's inability to adapt to the ODI format which we obviously played a way lot more than tests in the 90's cost India many games, infact might have cost SRT his captaincy too....He should be the last guy to act all righteous. When Ganguly who infact saved his careerODIs and his so called "friend" was dropped, went about carrying on like it is Business as Usual. Dravid is the last man we need to justify for this declaration....at the end of the day we won so all is well but those 6 runs wouldn't have mattered.....SRT doesn't care about the 200,but there was more of a sense of betrayal and a lack of communication.
maniac Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 ^My bad that tournament i was talking about was in Srilanka........I thought it was that series where SRT said F.o to saqlain after getting him out but Azhar was still the captain in that one

Yeah right! Sachin not caring about a milestone
Precambrian Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 Lol at attention seeking Sacchin haters asking Sachin to get over it. ****. He got over it the day it happened. Its a ****ing autobiography and it's got a mention in that. He has not moaned about it since 2004 in public. FFS. He and Dravid are still good friends and Dravid, despite Greg revelations made it to his book launch function. If you want to judge Sachin's whole career by a line in the book, go for it. Who ****ing stops you guys? Get some peace.
Precambrian Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 The book also talks about the immense amount of preparation he used to take before each series. His astute observation where he decoded some bowler by just looking at his pre bowling actions. He could've easily taken up captaincy when Dravid stepped down and it was offered on a platter to it. Instead he took the right course, being unselfish and actually led to grooming of INdia's most successful captain Dhoni. REad that "under the knives" chapter. That talks about the immense pain he had to undergo in mid 2000s. We wouldn't have become world no.1 in test cricket without his godly form in the period 2007-2011. And wouldn't have won the WC without his performances. But hey, lets all judge him by one or two lines in autobiography that apparently cancels out his contributions over a 25 yr career na? Jeez, even snakes are more grateful than these ****ing ***gots
Crookbond Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 We had them 6 or 7 down' date='no?I remember Kumble bowling seamup and getting few :haha:[/quote'] In 2004 Mohali Test, we had Pakistan 257/6 at end of Day 4 and allowed them to score 496/9 declared which allowed Pakistan to set 293 runs as target. We won the next Test match but lost the last Test match in Bangalore and the series ended 1-1. I am surprised that suddenly Pakistan becomes a "winnable" Test and England becomes "non-winnable" in hindsight. While that might be true, one should try to force a result - you never know how the Poms would react under pressure. I bet if Dravid or so called "non-aggressive" captains (decreed by the ICF junta) would have done it - it would be talked over as weak and feeble. We're letting it pass because it is Tendulkar. I still feel that the Dravid declaration at Multan was a poor decision but the defense of this decision seems LOVE.
maniac Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 message was communicated to him properly ' date=' but sachin missed it bcoz he was concentrating on something else which he considers as more precious if you know what i mean :giggle:[/quote'] I can go about picking instances, but then I will be accused of cherry picking, but having followed 22.5/24 years of SRT and 17/17 years of Dravid's career....I clearly know who is the more selfless cricketer....SRT yes likes his records I will be the first one to put my hand up and say it,but not at the expense of the team...unfortunately the stupid 100th 100 has given a lot of ammunition to haters :banghead: But no way in hell,Dravid the selfless beacon of virtue.....There is a clear jealousy there because Dravid has scored tons of runs but no one cares as except for 1-2 they never were impact innings like SRT's or for the matter of fact even Ganguly,Laxman,Sehwag etc.

We all know Dravid was not a fast scoring batsman. We all know he wasn't all that great in ODIs specially in his early days. The point we are discussing is not how Dravid was a snail .....the point is that DRavid would not be whining away even after all these years.Dravid wouldn't have turned a team game into 'my 200' game.Dravid wouldn't have turned an epic win into a personal whine fest.
