What makes Steve Smith tick?

I don't think it's home conditions. He scored well in India in his return to the Test side in 2013. He scored a century in England. He's not technically brilliant but he is balanced at the crease and has a brilliant eye. There is a similarity to Sehwag in that sense. Mentally he reminds me a bit of Ponting in the sense of having that sense of knowing when the match is in the balance and taking the game away from the opposition. Ponting was brilliant at that in his prime. I see a similarity in Smith.

He is talented. His technique is great, it may not be textbook but when you watch him play his technique is really good. His temperament is amazing and he reads the situation really well. His movements are amazing, he keeps his head still. Also he is a hard worker. Yes he is on a purple patch but Smith has always been a great batsman for quite a well especially in the domestic scene. To score runs in India (didn't ton up but got 92), UAE (90's), South Africa, England and in Australia at different types of pitches does show talent.

His defense is pretty strong and he has a great habit of judging the ball from the length,knows which ball to leave and which to attack

Any half decent bowler would have dismissed Smith at least long before his marathon scores.. to me looks like he has an obvious weakness - he shuffles to outside off and tries to force everything to leg side. Bowl him a foot outside off with the ball turning away or with an angle, he will make a mistake. Thats how he got out in last innings.. He will soon be found out by the bowlers and will probably never hit so many free runs in another series...

Smith is talented and unorthodox, our bowlers are very poor, the pitches have been rather flat and home conditions. Despite all this, I think Smith will do well in the future, although not as brilliantly as he's done now.

His technique is pretty good. Just because someone has an unconventional technique doesn't necessarily make it bad (and even if he does have a bad technique, he can still score runs e.g. Chanderpaul). I definitely don't think it is the home pitches either, because he has done pretty well in the past on other grounds. Indian bowling is weak, but he has big scores against other, better bowling attacks in the past as well. Of course, I'm not denying that he has some easy series ahead of him e.g. West Indies and England.
