Where does Dhoni stand?

In the past 20-25 years, which wicket-keeper batsmen have been better than Dhoni? In my opinion, the three that were undisputedly better are Gilchrist, Flower and Stewart. The others better than him (if you count them as wk batsmen) are ABDV, McCullum and Sangakarra. In test cricket, is Dhoni better than the following? Boucher Prior McCullum Haddin

\ I agree on Gilchrist and Flower ..However, do not think Alec Stewart was better than him in test matches.I can't remember any standout Alec Stewart performance against top gun teams of his time where he made an impact in terms of winning a test match or saving a game. Hwe was more a fairweather batsman.

I think he was England's top batsman or one among top 2 or 3 for some time. Don't go by batting averages only, not many had great batting averages in 90s.

He stands close to the stumps to fast bowlers and stands back to medium pacers/spinners.

But Stewart in general was a much better Test batsman - scored 15 hundreds, and averaged 38 away from home, scoring 7 100s in those. Did win a couple of Tests against WI and Aus - by scoring twin 100s in Barbados 1994 against the Ambrose-Walsh combo, and a 100 and a 50 in a low scoring Test in Melbourne 1998.

Was a pretty average keeper to be honest. Was lucky to replace the spectacular Jack Russell just because he was a better bat.

Healy's test average of 27 didn't do him justice - was a far better batsman than that. Solely as a 'keeper, he had few peers. Just that his successor in the ATG Aussie line-up just re-defined the role completely.

Seen purely from a batting POV, I would go with Flower in Tests and Sanga in ODIs. The reason is that Gilly's second half of the career was quite poor, and he also had the luxury of coming at 7 after one of the world's strongest lineups. I have not included Sanga in Tests since his finest batting cam after he gave up the gloves. I have not included ABDV in either format since it is uncertain as to whether he'll be a regular keeper throughout his career. I'd say the same as I did for Sanga, that many of his best years were when he wasn't keeping. Nevertheless, if Sanga and ABDV are thrown into the mix I'd go with Sanga in Tests and ABDV in ODIs. McCullum has had a bumper Test year, but it remains to be seen how long he'll sustain it. All of this has excluded Dhoni of course. I still believe that, even when compared against ABDV (his closest competitor) the man was without parallel as an ODI keeper-batsman.
