Vijy Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 Why vijay when there r 4 contenders already in rohit dhawan rahane uthappa? Coz they all suck: Dhawan and Rohit - FTBs Rahane - has been doing better in recent times, but needs to improve Uthappa - less said the better.
vvvslaxman Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 No. This will be like how we retained Dravid for ODIs in England based on his test performances. Vijay is not good at rotating strike a primary aspect required in one dayers. A reason why Laxman never did well in ODIs. Only ODI traits that M Vijay has is his slog across the line or lofted shot against spinners. Everything else goes missing. I would rather go with Manish Pandey or Naman Ojha

I would rather go with Manish Pandey or Naman Ojha Vijay's List A avg is very good, even if it IS on the Indian pattas. Pandey has had just one good List A reason, as seen from his overall poor avg. And besides, neither of the options you mention are technically sound openers. I'm playing devil's advocate here, since I'd rather continue with 2 out of 3 - Dhawan, Rahane and Rohit. Nevertheless, the first and last names on this list have been piss-poor.

Vijay's biggest reason for success in Test was his ability to leave the ball precisely. How will that strength help him in one dayers? Picking players for tests based on ODIs and vice versa have most of the time failed.
gakgupta Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 He plays T20s already (IPL). And seems to transition to tests just fine. No reason to believe he'd be unable to transition form ODIs to tests also Nope....now his IPL form is pretty bad....Pls check the stats ...while he had a good IPL form, his test form was bad.......now that his test form is back....his IPL form is shaky
mancalledsting Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 this is how we messed up chepu's batting form- we need test specialists
kosingh Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 this is how we messed up chepu's batting form- we need test specialists We messed up Chepu's batting form by taking him out of India. More than we messing up his form, he got exposed.
SLICKR392 Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 We messed up Chepu's batting form by taking him out of India. More than we messing up his form, he got exposed. I see that you were batting for him in South Africa
kosingh Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 I see that you were batting for him in South Africa Yep I was. And you were batting for him in the 2 tests in NZ, 5 tests in England, and 3 tests in Aus that followed where he has been pathetic.

Some of his dismissals have been to spin...are you telling me it's harder to play spin out of india?

Che has starts, but starts don't win matches - unless it's on a minefield where 20s and 30s matter.

It suggests poor temperament and innings construction. something which is the trademark of LOI centred players
Vijy Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 ^ That's true. Che is more of an LOI player, as his List A of nearly 55 indicates. He was never really a Dravid-like players; Rahane is closer (albeit more attacking).
BeautifulGame Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 Pujara doesn't have the range of shots Rahane has to be successful in shorter formats . He couldn't even nail down a spot in IPL
kubrickian Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 Yeah but consistently getting starts doesn't suggest inability to handle conditions as conditions are toughest when starting... It suggests poor temperament and innings construction. something which is the trademark of LOI centred players He has technical problems too. He has tentative footwork when ball is pitched fuller. Doesnt come fully forward and also sometimes leaves a gap between bat and pad when playing inswinging deliveries. Also his reflexes sometimes seem to be slow which is strange because he is only around 27.
vvvslaxman Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 Pujara doesn't have the range of shots Rahane has to be successful in shorter formats . He couldn't even nail down a spot in IPL On roads he was struggling where as someone like Manan Vohra was abe to hit through the line at will. Even Saha could do. Clearly he struggles to step into next gear .
kosingh Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 Yeah but consistently getting starts doesn't suggest inability to handle conditions as conditions are toughest when starting... It suggests poor temperament and innings construction. something which is the trademark of LOI centred players I am not sure he's consistently getting starts. In my rough count - he's played 27 innings abroad. In 11 of those 27 innings he's been dismissed for less than 20. In 9 of those 27 innings he's been dismissed for between 20 and 40. Even if he was consistently getting starts, I do not believe that itself means his technique and reflexes are fine. There so seem to be minor technique and reflex issues. He's reacting slightly late and he's not getting low enough when needed. That said his home average is around 75. You don't have an average like that if you have major issues in technique and reflexes no matter how good the home conditions are. I do think Pujara will eventually sort his issues out abroad. And hopefully we can once again talk of him as being the next Rahul Dravid, rather than the next Sanjay manjrekar or Mohd Kaif.
mancalledsting Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 I would consider >20 runs a start in tests 27-11= 16 ie 16 scores >20 in 27 innings 16/27 = 60% innings abroad getting starts I'd consider 60 % of innings with starts to be fairly consistent
mancalledsting Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 He has technical problems too. He has tentative footwork when ball is pitched fuller. Doesnt come fully forward and also sometimes leaves a gap between bat and pad when playing inswinging deliveries. Also his reflexes sometimes seem to be slow which is strange because he is only around 27. Failing to be able to play anderson when he's got the ball swinging both ways in UK and batting at no.3 doesn't necessitate technical issues. I've seen Ponting and Tendulkar in their prime struggle to Similar quality bowling. the gap between bat and pad and not getting front foot across to the off side for full length is what happens to purely test type batsmen when they try to faff around in t20/fast scoring modern ODIs and look to expand their compact games. Especially when batting in the top 3- technique needs to be tight. Dravid's test batting became horrible for the last 4 years of his career when IPL started and he tried to adapt his game. Vijay was an excellent test player 5 years ago- his test growth was stunted by IPL which caused loss of batting discipline and it's taken him ages to recapture the old spark. People tried to ruin Pujaras test batting- but now his form is down- they are targeting vijay and rahane to screw - as if LOI is the holy Grail and be all and end all. But I don't consider these slight technical issues to be the main reason behind Pujaras overseas under performance. He did perfrom well in RSA
Mindreader Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 vijay in odi based on test form??? why not then drop nohit and dhawan based on test form?
