There's an important factor that people are not discussing here. Bevan faced way better bowlers and there wasn't any powerplays and cement pitches. Dhoni had the luxury of fielding restrictions, mediocre bowlers and flat pitches. Bevan averaged 53 out of mostly 260+ scores whereas Dhoni averages 52 out of mostly 300+ scores. True, when Bevan played no one else was even close to his average. Now we have quite a few players with 50+ average. But Dhoni easily trumps everyone in this era too when it comes to finishing games.

Dhoni has played the majority of his career without fielding restrictions or powerplays. Bevan was not a big hitter but an accumulator of runs. To be a great finisher big hitting is very important....and Dhoni is a master of that. Running between the wickets was Bevan's strong point and Dhoni is equally good at that. Dhoni can do anything that Bevan could but not vice-versa. The quality of ODI bowlers that Bevan and Dhoni have faced are very similar. Dhoni is a master of chasing huge targets ....Bevan does not really compare here.

Yes, Bevan had a greater average than Dhoni for his era and Dhoni in the 90s would probably have averaged a shade over 40 or so- which still would've been country miles better than any other #6 in ODIs those days (except Bevan). But overall, Dhoni is a better finisher, of that there is no doubt- the same way Lance Klusener was the best finisher for a few years in the late 90s/early : Bevan was very very poor in hitting boundaries. Mostly it didn't matter for Australia because with Slater/Mark Waugh/Steve Waugh/Ponting, Australia rarely completely lost track of the net run rate in chases & Bevan was able to poke his way to scores like 70 off of 90 balls (2-3 fours) and take his side to victory. Dhoni can do that. Maybe not as well as Bevan can in the 90s setting but i find it hard to believe he would suck at it in the 90s. But what Bevan CANNOT do, is take Australia home with Asking RR being 7 in 90s or 8-9 or more today. That is what Dhoni can do and do really well. So he is my choice.

That's not true. Powerplays were introduced in 2005 and Dhoni debuted in 2004-05. They even had two Powerplays for quite a while too. The quality of bowling has went down and the quality of death bowling has went down even more alarmingly. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Indians only like using such arguments when it suits them, most of them think 3 Indian players would make the greatest combined ODI 11.

300+ scores trend has only started recently. For the most of dhonis career, a score between 270-280 is considered best.

In fact I'm sure if you compare 2011 World Cup to current World Cup, you'll find less 300+ scores. So much for "flat" Indian pitches
