Donal Cozzie Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 Dear ICC - If you have even a modicum of an idea of how to run a global sports event (and it looks like you probably don’t), please revamp the structure of the knockout phases of ICC tournaments and do away with the concept of the one-and-done knockout games. With the format the way it is a) You are denying quality teams with stellar records any ability to redeem themselves after one terrible night and b) You are denying fans the sort of quality entertaining we all yearn for. What on earth are you talking about. The entire format is designed so that the big teams can lose 3 games and still make the knock-outs. NZ was the ‘winner’ in their game against South Africa two days, but I am not a 100% convinced NZ are the better team (they might be, but I am not a 100% sold). Just as the Kiwis deserve all the praise and plaudits for pulling off one of the all-time great performances in ODI history, so do the South African deserve an opportunity for redemption. Yes - REDEMPTION. That is a very powerful sentiment in sports and one that endears a lot of sports fans. To see the fallen have the opportunity to wipe the tears off their cheeks, pat away the dust and have one more crack staying the tournament is priceless. I have watched (and re-watched) the highlights b/w NZ and South Africa multiple times and every single time, when Martin Guptill hits that incredible shot to seal the win, I feel more empty, like as though the movie I was watching ended prematurely without the climax. Surely, there’s more to these teams than just what we saw on that night. Do you not see the folly in your idea? By making it a best of 3 knock-out there wont be any tears there wont be any excitement there wont be any famous moments because you'll have just turned the most important riveting matches into a bloody bilateral series FFS. SA got beaten by the smallest of margins. Tough, thats what makes they world cup great, things are decided by tiny margins. Rather than moan and whine about how such and such a team were knocked out why not accept that they were beaten and move on? Just look at what the American sports franchizes are doing. The NBA, NHL and MLB all have ‘best of x’ formats in their playoffs to determine winners. Every playoff series is like a mini-move on its own, with a plot, sub-plot and a twist. It’s what the players love and the fans yearn for. Players raise the standards of their games when the stakes are higher. Do you think Daniel Vettori would have been motivated to stay with Guptill if it were NZ playing UAE in a meaningless league game, instead of SAF in a WC semifinal? Using american sports as an example of anything is just ludicrous. US sport sucks in every aspect. And what the hell do the UAE have to do with this? We're talking about semi-finals here With your current format, players and fans alike are subjected to 7 weeks of pedantic, predicable cricket in their league phase and less than half a dozen meaningful games in the knockouts. That ratio is simply unacceptable. That WC semi-final b/w NA and SAF will stay with me for the rest of my life, while I am already struggling to recall any tangible performances from the league phase. Well blame Pakistan and India for whinging about being knocked out in 2007 for that. Agree re:the length though, its too long, IF ONLY GAMES COULD BE SCHEDULED SO THAT TWO OR THREE TAKE PLACE ON ONE DAY!! And don’t tell me scheduling constraints drive the current formatting.. That is total BS.. In a 11 day span b/w Mar 15th and today, India has played a single game, A SINGLE GAME! And we are talking about an era where the players are fitter than ever and travel/accommodation more comfortable than ever. Have your overpaid boffins sit in a conf room for three hours and come up with a workable schedule. And if the people you employ are too incompetent, here are a few suggestions to get started with. • Make the WC an EIGHT team tournament Lol. You clearly have absolutely zero idea how a world cup should operate. A handful of teams, jesus christ even the myopic ICC havent gone that far (yet) • The leagues phase has 2 groups of 4 teams each. Tried that, again the big teams whinged so thats solely their fault. • In the group phase, each team plays the other team in the group TWICE, for a total of six games. So we get to see England and the West Indies play one-sided games with the others twice. Fantastic. Not to mention you make the group stage even more boring since if a team wins its first 3 games they're already qualified and can chill for the rest of the stage. • Top 4 teams qualify for the semi-final (Yes, no quarter finals) • From then on, it can either be an IPL style qualifier/eliminator to decide who the finalists are (or) Best of 3 semi-final games to determine the finalists • Finals is a best-of-three as well, but given the magnitude of the moment, you can do this simulate home and away advantage – The winner of the toss for the 1st game is determined by a random generator. If Team is the winner of the toss in Game 1, Team B is automatically awarded the toss in Game 2. Just imagine the sheer amount of planning and strategizing that can emerge from this. Yes lets turn a final, a riveting and pinnalce moment of the calendar into something fans have no idea will occur. Will the 2nd game be the final? The third?? No one knows and therefore you cheapen the very thing you aim to improve. I doubt the stadium in Australia would even sell out 3 times in a week and again you make a game which defines everything last 3 times longer than necessary. STOP GIVING US A CRAPPY PRODUCT LIKE WHAT YOU HAVE BEEN DOING TILL NOW. WE FANS DESERVE IT BETTER! You've ticked every box. Destroy cricket in all nations outside the top 8? Check Make knock-outs glorified group games? Check Use America as a baseline for sport? Check Make the final yet another glorified group match? Check Man, I thought the ICC was bad but posts like this make me thankful as it could be ten times worse.
jalebi_bhai Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 Why are people so afraid of knockouts? :dontknow: The current format is fine. No need to be a bunch pipsqueaks. If you don't have the composure to perform when it matters, then you don't deserve to win. Knockouts are fun.
mishra Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 World Cup means participation of whole world? At least get one or few teams from every continent. Eight team league will kill the sport
Donal Cozzie Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 Cricket is a pathetically ran sport as it is. Making the knock-outs as such so that a team can lose and still go through would be the icing on the cake. Not to mention 8 freaking teams :cantstop: Make these changes to the crappy Champions Trophy that no one cares about, because ironically you just described the CT with farcical knock outs
adi B Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 A WC without KO is no world cup!! You've got to perform under intense pressure situations and be the best from the rest

Everyone of your counter-points is palpably mediocre and stupid, so i am not going to take the time to type in a detailed response.. But in 30 secs UAE played in a WC game in 1996. OMG, their team is so formidable in 2015! You dont make associate teams better by extending an symbolic invitation to a glorified meet-and-greet once in 4 years..
BeautifulGame Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 Imagine a best of 3 finals for 100 m running race in Olympics :cantstop: We fans love sports for the high octane thrill moments it gives us which we cherish for life .Playing a best of 3 final would make a mockery of it No we don't want a glorified bilateral series to decide the best side in the world .We want the best team on the day crowned champions of the world

Maybe not but for sure u can kill the sport in a country like Bangladesh Zim or Ireland by doing this
vijay50 Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 :hysterical: Knock outs are a must. Yes ofcourse. Knockouts are a must for sending the chokers SA out every WC. Also the lungans.
Donal Cozzie Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 Everyone of your counter-points is palpably mediocre and stupid, so i am not going to take the time to type in a detailed response.. But in 30 secs UAE played in a WC game in 1996. OMG, their team is so formidable in 2015! Yes because the UAE having played something like 1 game vs a full member in that time should be expected to improve, while also ignoring the improvements made in Ireland,Afghanistan.PNG,Namibia and Nepal to justify your pathetic small minded hilariously ill-informed and better yet totally false assumption that a WC should be restricted which defies all logic and sense. Stick to the IPL or CT for 8 team events. So you wont argue my points, fair enough, I'll take that as a "burying my head in the sand" comment in that case. I mean I cant wait for the day India play Sri Lanka in a 3 game bilateral series/world cup final. Riveting stuff indeed.
Ram Posted March 25, 2015 Author Posted March 25, 2015 Looks like many here are fans a 1) A long and meaningless league phase, populated with one-sided game with star-struck associate teams that has ZERO consequence in the end anyway as Eight teams get to qualify for the knockouts.. 2) A spectacularly brief and sometimes unfair elimination phase where things that ultimately decides the winner of the premier prize in the cricketing calendar.
Donal Cozzie Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 Ram could well be Amla bhai in disguise, bilateral knock-outs sound right up his alley
Yoda-esque Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 If you see all the world cup winners (apart from '92), the best teams won . That should convince you.

Or we could a 15 team WC with 3 groups of 5 with a super 6 phase that allows teams to recover from a poor start while also expanding the game that all concludes in one final between the two best teams??
Lord Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 Ram could well be Amla bhai in disguise' date=' bilateral knock-outs sound right up his alley[/quote'] :hysterical:
BeautifulGame Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 And none of the american league sports are global sports event . Just cant compare a league run every with a global tournament like world cup that comes once in every 4 years Heck even the CL football has one off final to decide the winner. Its actually bizzare to even think of 3 match series to decide world cup lol
Crookbond Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 Why should I concerned with sporting events that i dont follow or care for? So, are you trying to tell us that no sporting bodies know to run global sport events?
Ram Posted March 25, 2015 Author Posted March 25, 2015 Or we could a 15 team WC with 3 groups of 5 with a super 6 phase that allows teams to recover from a poor start while also expanding the game that all concludes in one final between the two best teams?? Sorry, you have to try better. I am not going to have my cricket watching experience ruined by a bunch of accountants from Scotland or a collection of construction workers from Afghanistan. I need every stage of a 6-7 week long tournament to be of some consequence to the ultimate result.
Vijy Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 +1. Three way knockouts won't draw much attention as the one-game one does. And as you said' date=' the emotions is what makes the knockouts more interesting, three-way knockouts won't do that.[/quote'] Yep. And it also goes on to bring out the true character of the participating teams.
