Test recall is a joke of a selection. Any day over Ashwin in LOIs. Axar deserves a place above everyone else in LOIs.
Akshar over Ashwin? Ashwin has dramatically improved throughout the Australian test series and the world cup. Definitely deserves to stay in the team.

This thread should be bumped up. Our bench strength in spin is of crucial importance since our domestic batsmen run the risk of forgetting how to play spin.

Shreyas Gopal(Karnataka, right arm LB, age 21) 11 matches, 28 wickets(on those greentops where Vinay and co run havoc ), avg 32.75, BBI-4/51, BBM-4/51 8. Manan Sharma(Delhi, SLA orthodox, age 24) 5 matches, 27 wickets, avg 19.77, 2 5WKH, BBI-6/24, BBM-8/33 9. Rahil Shah(Tamil Nadu, SLA orthodox, age 29) 5 matches, 27 wickets, avg 19.77, 2 5WKH, BBI-7/34,BBM-9/82 10. Varun Sood(Delhi, SLA orthodox, age 24) 8 matches, 27 wickets, avg 20.88, 1 5WKH, 1 10WKH, BBI-6/43, BBM-10/93 11. Kamlesh Makvana(Saurashtra, right arm OB, age 31) 7 mathces, 23 wickets, avg 37.47, 2 5WKH, BBI-6/87, BBM-9/135 http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ranji-trophy-2014-15/engine/records/bowling/most_wickets_career.html?id=9513;type=tournament Punjab Ranji team bowling performances in 2014/15 season: d5fpiWm.jpg From the list you can clearly see that even Yuvi has outbowled Bhajji this season. Gurkeerat Singh Mann is a middle order batsman and a part timer, even he trumped Bhajji. Rajwinder Singh, an orthodox SLA, the other specialist spinner in the team also has better numbers. Vinay Choudhary, another SLA orthodox also has better numbers. As you can clearly see he is the 5th best spinner in Punjab, not a hallmark for great performance !!!! As I said elsewhere there are 50 spinners who did better than him in the domestic scene since he was booted out of the team. Disgraceful from the selectors !!!
pathetic, just a quick glance at Punjab season bowling proves Bhajji selection was a joke. Demented selectors seems to have go on his IPL and "Marketability" angle for a Test place

Not "marketability" but "aggression" and "flair".

What strikes me about this list is the utter lack of full-time leg spinners. Gopal is becoming more of a batting allrounder presumably. I really wish someone has seen Quadri and can report something about him.

TBH playing for Karnataka won't help young Shreyas much as far as development is concerned. In the greentops laid out for them in Ranji, Vinay and co are sufficient to get the job done. No wonder they are looking to develop Shreyas as an all rounder. High time BCCI starts a spin academy along the lines of MRF Pace Academy. Once upon a time we never needed such a thing but right now there is a great paucity of young talented spinners. Imagine these youngsters staying in such an environment with Bedi, Prasanna, Chandra, Venky, Kumble, Hirwani, Maninder, Raju, Kanwaljeet etc as advisers. We don't even need goras as mentors. All the info about spin bowling is present in India itself, if only BCCI had the foresight.

I wonder if a spin academy would be different - at the very least, it would, however, offer a standardized centre for spinners to work on their craft. Amongst the potential mentors, quite a few need to be eliminated - Bedi is too opionated and I don't think he would be effective; Pras and Venky should be fine; Chandra didn't sometimes know the nature of the balls that left his own hand and I'm not sure how much coaching he is experienced at; Hirwani and co of the 90s may do ok. Kumble is saddled with other responsibilities and I dunno how much time he has to spare. It must be said that all of this is predicated on the notion that young Indian cricketers actually care about Tests and not just the IPL and T20s. For most, it seems as though the latter is their ultimate goal, in their quest to achieve mediocrity and riches, often simultaneously.

Gopal should either move, or the Karnataka association should decide to give Gopal enough overs... after all, a genuine spinner should be able to take wkts everywhere.

Good to see selectors not go off Ranji stats where Vinay can top charts. They knew Mishra's potential and got him in. The only difference seems to be accuracy. In 1st innings something close to 90% on a good length. Line was relatively good too. He always had turn and variation. And Im sure there were spinners ahead of him probably in Ranji in terms of stats. And he's aging too but I feel he is alot more in control now and is here to stay in test side. Some fantastic selections in recent years nobody here would have backed initially. The return of Vijay, the return of Mishra. :hatsoff: Vijay had a disappointing Ranji season before comeback. Just a few good games in those North vs South type games. He was nowhere near top batsmen. And I don't see Mishra in top 14 either in OP. I think we are set in leg spin department now. This new Mishra finally has what old Mishra lacked which is control. He always had the skill.

To add to the above post regarding selectors it may have been something like Vijay's selection where 1 or 2 performances may have impressed them. Or it may have been like Mishra selection where IPL impressed them. Vijay, Mishra paid off Harbhajan played well in LOI's but was too defensive in tests and does not belong their anymore. Does anyone have the statistics of Vijay for season before recall. I believe his average was very poor in the Ranji season (not those North vs South type games he did well in). So can't fault selectors. Mishra- Hit Vijay- Hit Bhaji- Failiure in tests, decent in LOI's Going by Ranji stats of Vijay before recall and not seeing Mishra in top 14 Ranji spinners last season not many would have backed them initially. It's amazing how Shikhar Dhawan could have 50 batsmen ahead of him in average, Mishra could have 20 spinners ahead of him, Vijay could be among the poor performers. Yet when they still have the quality to outperform Ranji level top performers in international stage. Joginder Sharma average, Dinda topping charts few years back, Vinay topping charts last season are just few examples potential should be judged. And my hatsoff to those who encouraged come backs of Vijay and Mishra. I mean Vijay had if I am not mistaken a not so good Ranji and a poor test record. Why on earth would you recall some like that? Because he scored a few runs on patta's in North vs South match? But what a decision it turned out to be...well done selectors!

Gopal was always a batsman who could bowl. His early success gave the impression that he was a bowler but he was a batting alrounder and in age group cricket, he used to bat in top order.

It's true that Ranji stats are not everything but they have also yielded some accurate predictions as well.
