What does India need to become Number 1?

How about Barbados? That tiny island will beat the Indian team black and blue for most of its history and certainly in an all time XI!
Handful of Jamacians are beating 7 billion people on earth in racing :cantstop:. population beyond certain point act as burden and not as resource

BCCI is responsible for where we R' date=' a country of 1.2 bill that is 1/5 of world population n we R weak, no pride or goals of being the best, just make money[/quote'] Law of diminishing returns, buddy. A small startup may post handsome profit margin of 400% but have you seen any large multi decade corporation do that? Their numbers are usually like 2-10%, if at all they are profitable. Population matters only till a certain point and beyond that it is detrimental to national welfare. A tiny island in the WI was capable of challenging a World XI at one point of time - so population is not the factor here. Excellence is all about assembling the right resources at the right time. The same Barbados team has disappeared into the oblivion because conditions have changed.

Indians only seem to really care about ICC tournaments and the team performs considerably better in those tournaments. Team selection, strategy, fielding, even running between the wickets is on point in those tournaments. Its like watching a well oiled machine. But outside of those tournaments its like a mickey mouse operation. Probably because the team knows that public backlash won't be that bad if they perform badly in tests or bilateral ODI series, as opposed to a world cup.

Can't blame for being poor in bilateral series. Heck, as a spectator it's hard just watching those. Can't imagine how hard it must be for the players to take interest

Throw IPL out the window If you think this is bad, think about the next generation. Their life goals will be to play IPL and live a rich life of leisure. There is no point in playing 5 day cricket or 8 hour day cricket for that matter for little money.

Everyone knows that performances in test cricket are valued the most. If some player just wants to earn money through the IPL and doesn't want to play test cricket, then they most likely wouldn't be good test players even if IPL didn't exist. While cricket is a job, players who view it as just that won't get too far anyway. Anyway people always want more. If they are getting a lot of money playing in the IPL, then they still would want to earn more money (which can be earned by playing in the longer formats).

Unfortunately bilateral ODI series are almost meaningless so far unless there is some rivalry involved between the countries. Most Australians do not care if their team loses to Zimbabwe in an ODI as long as they do well in the world cup. Of course performing in bilateral series does matter, but it isn't crucial.

In all honesty I believe cricket needs to go NBA, NFL, NHL route of annual world series. 6 months of ODI world series and 6 months of Test world series This should have 30 teams with each team playing at least 45 ODI's per "season" plus playoffs of best of 5. 15 Test teams with at least 20 games per team and playoffs per season. For cricket to survive, flood gates have to open for associate teams/countries even if they suck. Make the game truly global. ICC is shyt for keeping the game between 7-8 major teams. Random bilateral tournaments are just meaningless. World cups are the most important but only happen once every 4 years which is not enough for the sport to sustain much less grow. Cricket isn't as popular as soccer so it makes no sense in following the 4 year world cup schedule.

Play the 11 below: - Gavaskar - Sehwag - Dravid - Tendulkar - VVS - Mankad - Dhoni - Kapil - Kumble / Chandra - Srinath - Zak :dontknow:
Good idea. May want to swap Nissar for Khan and then the perfect No.1 team (against current squads) will emerge.

1/5 population is wrong. 1.2 bil does not mean 1.2 bil are playing ciricket. Beyond a critical number of people additional population does not have a linear relation with sporting ability in a country.
Yes is true but did not stress on that as we might have 3 times more population atleast then the major cricketing nations and that is shameful, India should be as good as China atleast in sports n Olympics, well genetically Indians have their weak n strong areas n most are not physically gifted or athletic but then nor are S Lankans orBanglas even different, Banglas may be worse but have found ways to pick tàlent n there is where wefail

Need to revamp the whole system, beginning from the very grass root level, might not be a bad idea to identify and persist with different players for different format instead of fielding bits and pieces players, play specialist players, we need atleast 10-12 good fast bowlers with brains and bit of pace and 5-6 good spinners, atleast 6-7 allrounders of which atleast 4 should be pace bowling allrounders, and batsmen who are willing to defend and put price on their wickets and others who are ready to take attack to opposition.

TBH I don't care about whether we become no 1 in test cricket and I am saying that in spite of test cricket being the undisputed no 1 format. We suck at it and have been sucking at it for 70 years. Hope we keep churning out ICC tourneys. There are other sports to look forward to. 10 years back we had only tennis doubles and chess to compete with cricket. But now we have improved by leaps and bounds in many sports. No SRT, RD, VVS, Viru also:((. I am slowly moving away from cricket towards sports like badminton, hockey(where we have shown good performances since 2010), NBA, boxing, wrestling, squash etc.

Whatever it is' date=' the love affair with cricket is hard to divorce for me...[/quote'] +1,and also I am damn sure with tendulkar, ganguly at helms they won't let, this shyte to happen for long not to forget dravid and Laxman, it's how soon we do things to rectify all that's going wrong in indian cricket, it's not about skill rather than temperament, this lineup doesn't lack skill rather they lack the temperament, you see these guys playing aggressive shots, but lacks the will to smother the swing or spin, I remember seeing a guy like bangar, hanging around against England, in that famous win, we remember the contribution of tendulkar and ganguly, but not him, considering he took heavy blow from Flintoff and yet weathered the storm, the twin fifties from dravid in West indies on arguably, one of the most difficult pitches, not to forget Laxman special at Edens or dada at Brisbane , it's the lack of self belief, since we have choked on quite a few matches, that is hurting indian cricket, remember, one thing "man ke haare haar hai, man ke jeete jeet" , remember waugh was not a flamboyant champion like tendulkar, ponting or lara, he was a fighter, you need such characters in both batting and bowling, unfortunately nobody has stepped up in that regard especially in bowling.

But bro this team doesn't have the skillset. We are going through a very lean period as far as talent is concerned. Bench strength is a bigger letdown. You watched our A team playing RSA A?

+1. Nohit, Chepu and Dhawan have documented weaknesses outside SC. Kohli has been excellent everywhere but Eng (perhaps he will improve later). I'm not all that convinced by Rahane against spinners either. None of the present batsmen at this stage (not the future) are the equals of SRT and Dravid for instance.
