How do you define talent in cricket?

Inspired by another thread. For batsmen and for bowlers? Is it flair in shot making(batsmen)/producing jaffas to pick wickets as opposed to strangulating batsmen(for bowlers)? What all fall under natural talent? Do you consider intelligence, temperament, decision making, patience, courage,mental toughness, ability to grind it out in difficult circumstances as part of the talent package? Is the ability to work hard not a talent?(Gary Kasparov always insisted that the ability to work hard should also be classified as a talent implying that lazy guys like Tal can't claim to be more talented than the Botviniks). Please share your thoughts fellow ICFers.

Talent is inborn ability. It shows up at an young age, before gaining much experience. A group of young boys who are of the same age are given the same training for an year - at the end of the training regimen, one or more of the boys will usually stand out from the crowd - this is talent. A person with less talent can over take another person with more talent if he has more dedication and puts in more effort. Tendulkar is an example of talent - he was a better batsman at sixteen than most Indian batsmen in their twenties with several years of experience behind them. At sixteen Tendulkar could not have put in the same amount of effort as a twenty four year old batsman - that means Tendulkar needed lesser effort to reach the levels reached by senior guys. That is what talent is.

Talent is basically being unlucky when you bowl and have the flair when you bat, not to forget hooked to gems like mayanti and pallikal.

Talent: ability to score lots of runs and pick up lots of wickets, regardless of how ungainly or ineffective you look in the process :)

-Ability to pick up length quicker. More time. Mostly natural can be improved with training. -Hand eye coordination, mostly natural. Not everyone is like Sehwag and not move their feet and average 50 in tests with 80+ SR! -Timing. Ball fizzes off without batsmen appearing to put in much effort. This is mostly natural. -Front/Back foot technique in run scoring and defense -Leadership -Ablity to handle pressure -Intelligence -Work ethic -Power, 6 hitting ability -Apparently height. :D if you watched Gavaskar at lunch. Low center of gravity stuff. Should all come under talent for batsmen. Some more important than the other. Obviously picking up length quickly, hand eye coordination, technique and timing would be very important for a batsman. It's what separates a low level batter to a international standard batter. It probably also separates an average international batter from a good batter. Other aspects like ability to handle pressure and work ethic probably separate the good from the great I would think.

Talent - is natural, raw skill but doesn't mean you'll succeed. It's hard to measure, it's just eye testing really.

The dictionary definition of talent is "Natural aptitude or skill". Full stop. It's nothing else. Why should we hijack the word and include work ethic into it, when it clearly doesn't mean it? You aren't born with hard working skills, anyone can work hard. It's like how Indian constitution has hijacked the word "secular" and came up with its own meaning. Rohit Sharma is talented. Yes. What he is saying is everyone has a potential for everything. That includes how likely they are to work hard. That's what he was saying.

Talent is inborn,but it needs other qualities also.Kambli from the background he came was considered more talented,but he just faltered,away.Asif, Aamer were also very talented but other factors ruined their careers.If we consider Tendulkar,he may not be the most talented in the 16 year old group,but he had a supportive,financially stable, family.Most more talented cricketers have to leave cricket due to family pressure,financial conditions etc
