As I type, I see David Gower, Michael Holding and Ian Botham on my SS1 channel analysing a game of ODI. None of these greats of Test had a clue of ODI cricket ( Holding might have good stats but he is always bitter) but come on and give their useless gyaan on ODI ( same with Sunny ). Post 1990, did any one of these play any ODIs? I know Botham played 1992 WC and was humiliated. No Gower or Holding as far as my memory goes. And then these people discuss ODI cricket? Why cant't they just leave after Tests and let ODI Analysis left to say even a Nasser Hussain and like? Holding is the bitterest human = Bishan Singh Bedi IMO.

I sometimes wonder dont the English sky viewers get tired of watching same old beefy, athers, nas, michey, bumble?? I mean they are okay for test matches but surely new guys can come in for t20s and odis.it's getting boring tbh and I think botham is a poor commentator

They are so bloody prejudiced - it is not even funny. Athers, Nas and Bumble seem adaptable. So, benefit of doubt. Still - better people might be available - try Swann, KP or others. Move on for God's sake. Same with India - Move on from Sunny ( keep him in Tests Only ).

Dude, are you the highest-paid troll in the country? Tell us what these cricketers said and form some refined rebuttals to their opinions instead of posting a clueless reaction.

Yeah right, Gower had no clue about ODI cricket, which is why he was the top run-getter in the 1983 World Cup. Besides his career strike rate was higher than that of someone like K Srikkanth, who played a LOT on our batting wickets. Gower was an exceptional outstanding one day bat.
I know Botham played 1992 WC and was humiliated. No Gower or Holding as far as my memory goes.
Without looking at facts, how the hell is an aggressive all-rounder like Botham a misft in ODI? He turned in a superb match-winning effort vs Aus in 92-93(scoring 77 and taking 4-31) and his bowling was pretty key in that 1992 WC. Off the top off my head, I recollect Holding playing a vital role in winning the WSC cup in 1984-85. I am not sure if you looked up any numbers to check if they indeed confirm his utility

Chamataka, We discuss cricket without having played ODI. Atleast they (analysts you talk about) have played Tests and ODIs.

To answer your question people in England follow multiple sports. Its not as if they just watch cricket. Most people who watch cricket in the UK have cricket as their second sport played during the summer. Dont think anybody pays too much attention to the commentary in ODIs. I for one mute the TV are listen to BBC TMS (test match special) radio commentary. I am sure many do the same. If i were to make a guess 1/3 of the adult male population in England and Wales follows cricket in some capacity. Probably 10-15% of the population has cricket as their number 1 sport.

I don't like any English commentator other than Atherton. The rest are just hard core fans of English cricket with biased views. Nasser Hussain is a bit balanced, but throws in the odd irritating comment about their cricket.

Dude. I have stayed in UK for many years and I have a PR there too now ( If you are a customer of Thames Water - chances are that your Bill is from the code I managed :winky: ) .I visit UK very often too ( mostly for vacation but some official trips too ). Trust me - I have a good idea of Sports preferences of localites. I still don't get why Sky can't get ODI experts for commentary. Not that they cost more ( I saw Warne and Ponting in commentary for Tests). This Sky ODI commentary/Studio Analysis is not restricted to UK. Star Sports is relaying the feed and Analysis/commentary directly to India too. And Beefy and Holding talking about ODIs :banghead:

Dude the argument is flawed....gavaskar may not be a odi expert but when say coming to things like technique etc...there are not too many people better than him who has played the game when it comes to that....same can be said about holding with the ball or bothams cricketing acumen. Keep aside gavaskars obsession with records etc but when he gets into the technical aspects of the game the guy is a fricin bible for batting....yeah there are some people like shastri or rameez raja who are neither articulate like a harsha bhogle or the wi commentator(famous guy but drawing a blank right now) or neither were great cricketers. By this logic afridi, kevin o Brian and Yusuf Pathan should commentate every t20 games going forward.

Never get bored of Bumble! I like Atherton and Nasser as well. Would like to see Vaughan and Swan but they have BBC radio duties

It's fair to criticize commentators/analysts for not providing proper analytical inputs for ODI cricket or for any format for that matter. But it's unfair to expect the commentators to have done well in the format themselves. The sky commies may or may not be expert ODI cricketers, but that's not the problem. The problem is not doing their current job - commentating - well. Maybe the OP could have been more focussed on how they are bad analysts. Their cricketing accomplishments do not matter. If that's the case the likes of Harsha should never step into the commentary box.

I am sure they are there cause people want them. I did watch post match analysis not sure what made you call holding bitter. Seemed fine to me.

I remember watching Tendulkar's 92 at Barbados test in 1997, he played a royal square cut shot for 4 off Bishop to a ball which rose to the height of his chin, probably the best square cut shot I have ever seen though I rate Gordon Greenidge and Adam Gilchrist as the greatest players of that shot. Holding during commentary - "Tendulkar was lucky that the ball didn't rise too high, he's got the pitch he wanted." :WTF: It seems Holding is not only bitter about limited overs cricket, but any form of cricket after 1980s.

oh please i have heard worst from South africans; Robin Jackman is probably the most bias commentator. Despite all the effort Manjraker puts in to sounding neutral, you should hear him gloat when India are in a commanding position.
