sandeep
These stats ( from tests played IN VARIOUS COUNTRIES ) show that SO FAR in test matchesKohli -- He is very very good on bouncy tracks, bad when the ball is swinging and OK on turning tracks.Rahane -- He is very good on bouncy tracks, OK against swing and bad on spinning tracks.Vijay -- Is good on bouncy tracks, OK against swing and good on turning tracks.Pujara -- He is OK on bouncy tracks, bad against swing and very good on spinning tracks.Dhawan -- He is bad on bouncy pitches, inconsistent against swing ( maybe ok and maybe bad ) and good on turning tracks.Rohit -- He is bad on bouncy tracks, inconsistent to bad against swing and good on turning tracks. I don't think Dhawan is good against spinners, he overdoes the attack and resorts to sweeping way too often, almost Australian type of approach against spin. Link to comment
G_B_
i think Rahane IMO give him time. He was raised on mumbai pitches which have traditionally helped spin and has a good first class average. It might take him a few games but he will get there. doccricket and express bowling 2 Link to comment

I meant...he has a good record on turning tracks...not necessarily that he is very good against spinners.Just giving a snapshot of what some of our top batsmen, mostly current and some past ones, have done in different countries. Rahane is a batsman who seems to improve every season....and he is a fighter. He will improve his game on turning tracks, given a little time. One area he needs to work on is being a bit more consistent though and notch up higher scores in more innings. He has the class and ability to be a 50+ average player. Link to comment
fineleg
Rahane and Kohli both need to do a lot of work to improve their defence play without edging or lobbing the ball. Laaloo 1 Link to comment

I hope for his and Team India's sake, that doesn't keep happening. Link to comment

I hope for his and Team India's sake, that doesn't keep happening. Please do not compare the two . you are confusing formats here . Rohit is a nobody in Tests & Rahane has already played career defining innings a few times overseas he just needs some runs on home pitches , which he will score on eventually . doccricket 1 Link to comment
jusarrived
Virat and Rahane will come good , its the ODI approach which is affecting their game against spinners , playing too many shots . VJ and Pujara are very good . Dhawan & Rohit are crap , both dont pick spinners that well and unlikely ever will . doccricket 1 Link to comment

Muloghonto
Perhaps it has something to do with not playing any first class cricket in India, whatsoever for a couple of years(if not longer) straight for batsmen such as Kohli, Rahane, etc. Before, even Tendu used to play 2-3 FC games a year and so did everyone else, meaning the best players played against each other in FC cricket and since India could throw up the worst of the minefields, most challenging for batsmen against spin, these players got some opportunities to keep their skills sharp.IMO, T-20 and ODI advent has had the most obvious impact in terms of batting and bowling against spin. We, as well as the world, has, to put it simply, become more 'australian' in their approach to spin: footwork or no footwork, always play with hard hands and decisively. The pressures on off spin has been to give up flight and loop- all those that are vital to dismiss batsmen 'not looking to get out as priority#1, aka test-mode' and focussed on flatter and more accurate trajectories , intended to tie batsmen out and get out batsmen 'who are looking to make runs as #1 priority, aka 20-20 or ODI mode).Decisive shotmaking against flat, accurate spin bowling requires playing with hard hands most of the time, as the angles are not there to meet the ball with the full face of the bat as well as deftly deflect it across the field. Where is the cut shot in ODI cricket, let alone the late cut ? The reason is because we don't have loopy, flighted deliveries that 'break massive' after pitching anymore, which is what batsmen with quick hand-eye can adjust at the last moment and hit it 'out of the wicketkeeper's hands', ala late-cut. One could argue, that thats just off spin, leg-spin still offer big deviations & changes of pace after pitching to offer batsmen the opportunity to play with nimble hands and solid footwork, but that is a moot point, because legspin is more or less, dead at the domestic/fc level in most countries. In India, there used to be atleast 1-2 quality leggies in domestic cricket throughout its history, now we haven't had a good leggie emerge since the emergence of...Anil Kumble!! doccricket and Mosher 2 Link to comment
