randomGuy
95% of India already understands and speaks basic Hindi. Bangla, Marathi, Oriya etc by default understand Hindi since their language is similar. Thanks to North Indians living in South India and to Hindi tv,movies and songs, South Indian understand Hindi too. Those southies who can't speak or understand basic Hindi are barely 5% of India's population.India is 1/6th of humanity. Add Pak, BD, Nepal, some part of Afghanistan, UAE and south Asians arnd the world, it makes the number somewhere around 25% of humanity -the people who speak atleast basic Hindi. Hindi is already very very big. We must learn English (it is the only international connect langua) but It is upto Indian society only now to not overemphasize on English. maniac
He is also right about English education will only get us bread. Few countries in the world teach in their local languages they do good on innovation as well.ex Japan.Agree.....In fact a lot of my Chinese colleagues have even the settings on their phone in their local language....a)we would never do that because we are more comfortable with English and b) If someone did that people would consider him uncool

zen
Haven't read the details but appears as if this is also about not considering a non-native such English as superior. As this could result in people undermining their local culture/language, which could in turn could impact a person devotion to the country, i.e. why would you be that devoted to a country whose cultural aspects you would not rate highly? .... Looking back, the British were smart in promoting everything British as superior to local which meant that many though supporting British the right thing to do

Vilander
One thing is there, many Indians lack content when they speak English. They should understand they would never be as fluent in English as they are in their mother tongue. They should never try to crack jokes, come across as funny, excited etc while speaking English. It looks lame. Should use English only when necesaary just as a transactional language.Generalization. Indians lack content when they speak English. Have you heard Salman Rushdie Talk? kosingh
I'd rather speak English with my Bengali and Tamilian colleagues. Just works better than some them trying to speak Hindi.
