Is Virat Kohli Best Batsman?

After seeing the performance of this young cricketer nobody can have a doubt about his shining career as a cricketer. In this article he explains how he chased 39 runs in last 3 overs against Australian. However, you can't bet on his performance in his future matches as he's very much depressed due to his failed relationship with Anushka.

He is not the best but he is a much better batsman. Still he have time to get more matured and become a batting legend like sachin, ponting, lara and sanga,....  he has a bright future :two_thumbs_up: and will break sachin's ODI records for sure. Not sure about his test and t20 abilities. Will See :hmmm:

Virat has some real problem in hitting sixes , Yesterday I was watching old video of 16 year old Tendulkar hitting 3 sixes to Qadir and two to Mushtaq , don't understand why a batsman like Virat who looks much stronger than 16 year old Sachin cannot hit sixes

It's just not his style. He can find find 2 boundaries out of nowhere . but he just can't hit those big ones.

At the same time he is not taking any risks and getting better rewards

So don't care about his 6 hitting abilities.. He should start opening with maggi in ODI's and T20's already

Naaa...one down is his own place and he should stay there.

Sure opener wont last long anyway.. he is an opener tech

Yes. But traditionally the no 3 place belongs to the best batsmen in the team. We should be finding better openers rather than pusing our lower order batsmen up the order.

he still hits a decent no of 6s which had 5 sixes which is quite sufficent yes not as much someone like rohit can but then at the end of the day runs matter on board on board.

His S/r is still more than rohit n equal to Ms in Odi n T20 wat else u want. Most batsman have some sort of shortcoming but at the end of the wat matter is how they score runs n wins u matches.

His consistency is amazing, his hunger for runs and the will to be the best i wish other also have that .

M not sure he is the best batsman or not but in currrent day n age he is the best role model for youngster and for his teammates as well. The hard work this guy has done on hi game n fitness is freakish.

The debate will keep changing becoz every batsman hit purple patch diff times but how wud he go down in books of cricket wud be decided when he ends his career. All i wish he doesnt loose his hunger n passion

Opening is where you hide your weak links . Virat is too good a player to be wasted there , we have had an alternative for no3 I would ideally want him at 4 . its at that position where you can control the game much better than at there , but at this point I wudnt really bother changing his slot .

I don't think we can hide weakness in opening , if you have problem playing seam and swing , you will definetly get exposed , now in limited overs cricket middile order is place where you can hide your weak links .

I was only talking about LOIs . Sharma and Dhawan cant play seam and swing , they are doing alright

How many of you will like this article?? I was in a fix where to post it, IN that AVKC thread or here, and then I chose this thread as virat is simply excelling in LOI:

Virat Kohli vs Sachin Tendulkar: Comparing the numbers

Is Virat Kohli really as good or better than Sachin Tendulkar?

After his century in an Indian Premier League (IPL) match last weekend, there was a renewed chorus from some commentators and fans comparing Virat Kohli with Sachin Tendulkar.

Is Kohli really as good or better than Tendulkar?

Going purely by batting averages, he has done better than Tendulkar in the shorter format of the game, including one-day internationals (ODIs) and IPL. Tests tell a different story.

It is difficult to compare men of two different eras even if their eras somewhat overlap. No statistical exercise can definitively prove that one player is better than the other. Conditions vary with place and differ more so with time. Then there are other factors. Were the grounds larger then? Are the bats bigger now? What about the fact that Kohli never faced someone of the calibre of Wasim Akram and Curtly Ambrose and so on. But numbers can throw up interesting facts, which if nothing else, can arm a fan better the next time a cricket debate breaks out.

The chart traces the evolution of Kohli’s average over the 163 ODI innings he has played so far. This is then compared to how Tendulkar’s average evolved match-by-match over the same number of innings.

Both were off to relatively slow starts. However, Kohli dominates. Tendulkar’s average hovers around 40 or below. Kohli’s average is mostly over the 40 mark and frequently in excess of 50.

But then the game too had evolved from a more even contest between bat and ball, to one dominated largely by the bat. The introduction of free hits and other big-score friendly innovations seems to have tilted the game in favour of the batsman, besides the improvement in sporting facilities and support systems.

What about the format which has remained relatively unchanged through the years? Kohli has played 72 Test innings so far and scored nearly 3,000 runs. Tendulkar scored nearly 300 runs more than Kohli (3,284 compared to 2,994) by the time he played the same number of innings. His average was also higher.

A fairer comparison may be to the batsmen of their own generation. Kohli’s 72 Test innings were divided into seven periods. His average during each period was compared to the median average of the batsman who played between the start of the first and last innings in each segment. Players who batted after number seven were removed so that results are not skewed by tail-enders.

He outperformed the median test batsman on five out of the seven segments under consideration. He scored seven fewer runs than the median batsman per innings in the two periods of underperformance. He scored between 10 and 37 runs more than the median batsman when he outperformed. He beat them in all periods at the 30th percentile mark. This meant that he beat only the bottom 30% of batsmen at all times.

Tendulkar outperformed at the 50th percentile mark. This means that he scored more runs than 50% of batsman at all times when he was at the same stage in his career as Kohli. He scored between 2 and 49 runs more than the median test batsmen per innings.

g_plainfacts300416_3.jpg

But when we do the same exercise for ODI careers, Kohli outperfomed the median batsman in all seven. He scored between 13 and 38 more runs per innings than the median ODI batsman. He also beat all batsmen at the 80 percentile mark. This means that he outscored 80% of ODI batsmen all of the time. Tendulkar also outperformed the median batsman at all times when he was at the same stage as Kohli.

Tendulkar averages higher in matches that India won in both formats of the game. Kohli has done better in ODIs but his winning average is lower than his overall average in Test matches.

One major failing of Indian batsmen, traditionally, has been batting on quick and bouncy pitches outside the subcontinent. How do the two compare?

Kohli has, however, done worse in away matches in both ODIs and Tests. Tendulkar averages lower in away ODIs, but slightly higher in Tests.

I think its too difficult to break to Sachin's no of ODI runs. VK is 27  and has 11 years of International cricket career left. Means he needs to score 1000 runs every year. Bit difficult as one can hit bad patch too.

there is no such tradition like that. Our best batsman SRT wasnt a #3 batsman.

You're right. It is too difficult for Virat to break Sachin's Record but it is not impossible. Nobody can predict when a player will be in good form and set a new record. That's why Cricket is such an interesting sport game.

In tests, the best strokemaker in the team bats at 4 after the top order has seen off the new ball. In ODIs a frequently expressed opinion is to have the best strokemaker in the team open so that he can face the maximum number of balls.

Since Kohli is doing so well at 3 in ODIs the team management can either take the conservative approach to keep him there and not fix something that ain't broken or take a leap of faith and ask him to open and face as much balls as possible. It's a difficult decision to take.

Legends have yielded that VK loves to perform in uncommon circumstances. His style of grasping the diversion circumstance is amazingly imperative. He by and large take a bit time to fathom the rhythm of the preoccupation and a while later start going about as requirements be. Not this stage is regarding his execution but instead about on every spot even android applications like Live Cricket Matches,IPL and Krickoo, kohli is the title of the story.
