I just said, two can't be compared as both are different breed. An opener has to face different challenges than MO bats. I said Root is a better bat by seeing him bat, standing up to challenging situations; on tougher pitches too he has held his own much more than Cook. And hence my conclusion. Nothing to do with the brand of cricket either play. When Root would have played 126 matches, 226 inn, he will certainly have more than 10000 runs in tests. But IF he plays that many. No one knows about future.

But you are still missing the point. Fans go gung ho when it comes to Amala KP abdv root kohli williamson. But there is this guy Cook who has kept England in top of test arena for last decade or so without getting any serious recognition and fans like you finding a reason to bring down his stature which is and should be among ATG. Bottomline is, He is most successful test batsman right now. On that grounds i am calling him best batsman.

Despite having such poor attack world wide they haven't been extra ordinary. But Cook is not th best among them either. As far as batting brilliance is concerned, Root and AB d are better. Ever Amla is superb these days. But Cook has played 126 match. Let these guys play as many too.

maniac Posted June 1, 2016 Posted June 1, 2016 Cook has already overtaken likes of Lady Jaya and Inzimam as he has performed in all conditions,but obviously they have stellar ODI records as well,so he really has to break Sachin's record to be considered an ATG. I don't see Border despite holding the record considered to be one of the greatest ever-He also was a WC winning captain to boot....Yes Border is an ATG but just seems a league below Scahin,Lara,Gavaskar,Ponting and even Kallis and Sanga,,,so Cook has to really put the record beyond everyone's reach to be considered one. tweaker 1
