1. Cricket is not a puny sport. It has the second most number of fans globally, with over 1.5 billion people following it. It doesnt matter if 50 countries play it or 5, what matters is how many people follow it.

2. While those people you named are deserving of Bharat Ratna, so is Tendulkar and I'd contend that Tendulkar deserves it more. Simply because he was way more popular and is idolized way more than those guys. Awards are not just about what you have done, its about impact on people's lives and public adoration. Taking the last two in conjunction, nobody matches Tendulkar in history of Republic of India, so he is a worthy reciepient.

Unfortunately yours is the kind of ignorance that is ubiquitous in our country, where jo dikhta hai woh bikhta hai.

Popularity based on a highly televised and covered sport can never be grounds for Bharat Ratna.

Do you have any damn idea how competitive a sport chess is at the global level ? Atleast a 100 times more than cricket.

Anand is a 5 time world chess champion.

Tendulkar's achievements are not even 5 % of Anand's in terms of difficulty and competition.

Unfortunately Chess is not a highly televised sport nor is it television friendly nor can it attract the level of audience  like cricket because the level of chess played by people people like Anand is way above the understanding of normal people.

The work of people like Verghese Kurien and Vikram Sarabhai has bought livelihood to millions of lives and solved many of India's problems,

one has to be mighty dumb to compare that to a walking and talking commerical peddlar who has spent a good part of his life endorsing

Pepsi, addidas shoes and other wares. What a joke...

Actually sachin fans give both cricket and sachin a bad name.

Sachin is ordinary as a person, i.e. he is nowhere near a great human being.

He is a great cricketer , deserves bharat ratna. cricket is a big sport. Kohli is better than sachin

While i agree that there are others who probably deserve to get a Bharat Ratna ahead of Sachin, your posts seem to give me the vibe that you are hating on Sachin because he was bestowed with the award ahead of probably more eligible guys.

What should Sachin have done when he was bestowed with the award? Refuse it saying guys like Vishy deserve it? It was probably a publicity stunt by the Congress but hating Sachin because other top sportsmen haven't received any attention is ridiculous and childish.

Sorry i I hurt your feelings, but you are absolutely wrong. Please read the below article for when this news first broke out and read about Anand's humility. Unlike Sachin, Anand has a lot of genuine class as a human and far less personal greed.

Sachin is a known dal badlu ( party changer ). When Shiv Sena was in power in Mumbai through the 90's, he could not stop schmoozing to

Bal Thackeray and Shiv Sena. Mumbai dailies then every other week had articles of Sachin visiting Thackeray's home for his favorite seafood.

Suddenly when Congress came into power displacing Shiv Sena his relations with Sena soured and he struck a back hand  deal with Congress for a Bharat Ratna.

What i hate about the guy is behind that squeaky clean public image that he has crafted most meticulously, is a not so clean and straightforward guy. On the other hand is class Anand, who made it clear and hinted that unlike Sachin he would not be lobbying for it.

Everybody who is the know about what happened, knows what political maneuvering Sachin did.

Only a fool would question Vishy's class. He's without doubt one of the most down to earth guys you'll ever see. But, what does humility, class, greed got to do with Bharat Ratna?

It's bestowed "in recognition of exceptional service/performance of the highest order".

I don't see any requirement regarding how the person acts in his life. So, all your arguments about how Sachin is a "Dal Badlu", fake image etc are absolute non factors. The only thing that matters is his performance while representing India.

Granted that there are other stars who maybe deserve the award more than Sachin but like it or not, popularity matters particularly when Political parties have the power to bestow the award. To hate a guy because he received the award ahead of more eligible guys is ridiculous. It's not like Sachin announced his name himself for the Bharat Ratna. If you want to point fingers, you better point them at Congress party who were pretty excited to recommend his name for the award.

As for hurting my feelings, come on, It's so obvious that you are taking this issue way more personally than me. I wonder why?

So what ? A lot of nuclear physics is also way above understanding of common people...give them all Bharat Ratnas too ? Look, when it comes to a sportsman getting a Bharat Ratna, populism is the main benchmark along with excellence. Ie, excellence at a populist sport will get you national recognition. Not just in India, everywhere. nobody cares much about the all-time darts champion. Or the all-time champion of Hurling. That is reality.

One is mighty dumb to think national awards are only deserving to industrialists and scientists, nothing speaks of establishing class barriers as failing to recognize civilian work of the highest level outside of these fields.

Buddy, your utter ignorance is laughable. Pls enlighten yourself a little bit before mouthing off and come out of your fanatical blind mode.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verghese_Kurien  .Pls look at the profile of the great man and tell me how puny Tendulkar is even comparable to verghese Kurien

To equate Ambani to Verghese Kurien. You must be really high or really low on common sense.

What is the most popular sport in India........On a global scale, what sport is associated with India......Who is the most popular and successful sportsperson in terms of accomplishments, popularity, fame in India? who is the first sportsperson you think of when India and sports are uttered in the same sentence?

Now If your problem is Vishy Anand and some other deserving candidates didn't get the recognition,I agree with your sentiments but what has Sachin to do with it? He is deserving too and he got it,so what is your rant here?

Again Personal controversies and what kind of a human you are shouldn't matter in the way of Bharat Ratna.

Well my beef is that he got it too soon. Bharat Ratna is awarded for  a lifetime of achievements. All the recipients prior to him got it for lifetime achievements, alot of them got it posthumously.

His was a case of aggressive lobbying and siding with the congress for a quid pro quo arrangement rather than true merit.

What has he achieved outside cricket in his lifetime to be awarded the Bharat ratna ? Selling Pepsi and VISA credit cards ?

In this age of massive broadcasting and cable TV, everybody can watch all the matches going on, so to justify that he inspired youngsters who watched him on TV is utter nonsense that only floats in India. The same youngsters could also get inspired by watching Bevan or Ponting or Lara or Pietersen.

Sachin is given Bharat Ratna becoz he is one of greatest icon of Modern India . Definitely the most adored and arguably the most inspirational Icon among younger generation since 90s .

Frankly growing up in 90s for most youngsters u could even argue Sachin was the only one who made India proud on world stage .

He fully deserves Bharat Ratna more than most who have received .Just becoz some great persons didn't get it doesn't mean Sachin should more so when the likes of Rajiv Gandhi and MGR have .

As for Vishwanath Anand he is a great sportsmen but his contributions to India society are remote .He has already got the Khel Ratna award for his sporting achievements which is our highest sporting award.

Tendulkar is comparable to Kurien or any other Bharat Ratna because Tendulkar has achieved in his field comparable, if not greater accomplishments to any other in the field of science, technology or business.

Your problem is, you make a fundamental assumption that sporting glory cannot compare to entrepreneur or scientific glory. Which is nothing more than classist nonsense. You are probably one of those people who doesnt encourage their children to excel in sports or seek a career in it if they were good enough, because it is a 'lowly pursuit' compared to be a technocrat.

Tendulkar didnt get the award too soon. Sporting people have their careers come to an end by the time they are 40-45 ( using Golf as an example of late retirement sport for example), while industrialists, scientists, etc. still churn out their careers till they are 60-70.

So it makes sense that if someone is to get an award for sporting excellence, they can get it after they retired/very close to retirement, since the qualifying criteria ( excellence in sports) is fulfilled by then.

Ignorance again. No sooner did he announce plans to retire, his lobbyists went a overdrive and murmurs of Bharat Ratna started. Within months of his retirement he was undeservingly bestowed the Bharat Ratna. Why the unholy hurry and huge exception for him ?

For what is essentially a lifetime achievement award for service to the nation, where 30 % of the  recipients '"received" it posthumously, and the rest in their absolute old age, why the preferential treatment for him ? Did he perhaps have nothing to contribute to social causes after active cricket ?

I agree with a previous poster. Giving the Bharat Ratna to Tendulkar is a shame, but the award has already been degraded before by giving it to a couple of unworthy politicians, Tendulkar is certainly way better in comparison

What unholy hurry ? If the award is for sports, then the award eligibility begins the moment the guy retires form sport. Feel free to lobby for a merchant/entrepreneur/technocrat when he/she retires form post too.

If we feel someone is deserving of Bharat Ratna and has fulfilled his criteria (sporting excellence) & is not going to add to it, why not put the name forth immediately ? Sporting legends are eligible to be inducted in their hall of fame (such as Hockey, NBA, NFL, etc) the moment they retire. So why not Tendulkar ?

His award is due to Cricket. He is retired form cricket, thus not adding more to his eligibility. Those who received posthumously never technically retired form their field or if they did, blame THEIR lobby group for not putting forth their names sooner.

Most sportsmen retire at the age of 35-45. Most technocrats retire at 65-75. Most businessmen retire in the same age, if at all. So its natural that a sportsman's award will come sooner, as his career is over sooner.

There is no shame in giving Bharat Ratna to someone who is the sporting equivalent of JRD Tata or your precious Kourien. If one can earn Bharat Ratna in sports, which it CLEARLY states it can, then excellence in sporting work is equal to excellence in science or public service.

you stating that some public servant or scientist deserves it more than Tendulkar shows that you think one profession is better than another kinda BS and think sports is worse than scientific pursuit, while showing your ignorance of the CRITERIA for the Bharat Ratna in the first place.

 You said it.
The Bharat Ratna has been reduced to an award of political patronage and one used to score petty political goals. If Sachin deserved it, then amongst sportsperson so did Dhyan Chand, V. Anand, MC Mary Kom, Pankaj Advani . Sachin got preferred as putting his name forward gave the party in power maximum leverage at that point of time.

I have no answer to your brand of logic and idiocy. He is not " my precious Kurien" but the father of modern India's dairy industry. His work has provided livelihood to millions of families and continues to. You could not even get his spelling right. It would not make a SH*T of a difference to India if tendulkar was never born, but people like Vikram Sarabhai and Kurien have changed millions of lives in India and are beyond compare.

Sachin too has changed millions of lives. You simply are a guy who peddles old world, dated concepts on how technocrats & businessmen are more valuable than sportsmen type of nonsense.

Pray tell me how an any individual whose vision and actions have provided livelihood and a respectable life to millions of rural households be compared to a  cricketer. Pls tell us how Tendulkar has  "changed" a millions of lives in comparison. Go on..

Muralitharan was atleast as important  or more important to Lanka as Tendulkar was to India.

Muralis records  as a bowler will never ever be approached. Not in our lifetimes. Whereas most of Sachin's will be smashed within 10 yrs.

Had Murali played for India, he would be as big an icon in India as Sachin. This is the moot point. That Sachin is a product of the media, the media of a country representing 1 billion plus people.

Some fail to understand that cricket is ultimately a sport/entertainment. How does one compare a materialistic entertainers contribution to the country as an active cricketer to people who gave almost 5 decades of their life to social development. How can they be put on the same pedestal.

The effect of Tendulkar, a world-dominating cricketer in the most prominent sport in a nation of 1.2 billion people has done a lot to inspire people, its no coincidence that the rise of dominant batsmen from India, such as Sehwag, Kohli, Dhawan, etc. all come a generation after Tendulkar.

Plus the millions of people he's inspired as a winner, instilling confidence and the winning mentality is incalculable.

And if Roosevelt was an Indian president, we'd have given him Bharat Ratna. So what ? Murali is not Indian. If he was Indian, i am sure he too would be considered for Bharat Ratna. Having more than 1 cricketer having accomplishments enough to be awarded Bharat Ratna does not diminish their achievement, just like having more than one technocrat good enough to be given such an award doesnt diminish their individual accomplishments.

Quote

Because everyone is materialistic, everyone wants materialistic gain. And it is a backwards, third world mentality to consider one profession more noble than another or more worthy than another. This is why India and Indian mentality is third world and in the west, where a professor will happily become an unionized janitor for greater pay and benefits with nobody judging them as less worthy, is a first world nation.

Cricket is a sport. Sporting accomplishment is criteria for Bharat Ratna. It says so in the official website itself. Therefore, unparalleled accomplishment in sports is just as good as unparalleled accomplishments in science, tech or social work.

Its idiotic to consider sporting accomplishment any less than scientific or social one. It requires just as much hard work, if not more hard work to be a sportsman, with far greater uncertainty. An engineer or a scientist doesnt have to worry about 'tomorrow i go to work and if my work turns out bad, i get injured and never work again'. A sportsman has to. And just like how in the west, sportsmen are given just as much respect as technocrats and businessmen, India too is moving in that direction and your backwards, outdated mentality of judging professions, is on its way out.

Here I must interject.

Let us revisit what the Bharat Ratna was meant to signify. Exemplary and service to the (Indian) society, which would leave an imprint on the future generations. Personalities like Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, CV Raman, Vinoba Bhave, Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan etc were some of the better known recipients.

Sometime in the 90s, the charter of the award was changed, and excellence in the fields of traditional musicians, mainstream musicians and sports were also included.

Tendulkar, is arguably the greatest cricketer of all time, but he is nothing but an entertainer at the end of the day. Yes, he has made us proud, and he has won India glory. But the impact of Tendulkar's centuries on the Indian society in say a 50 years from now will be next to nothing. The Bharat Ratna, as an award loses its sheen when its awarded to entertainers.

Neither Sachin, V Anand (probable), Ustaad Bismillah Khan, Lata Mangeshkar or Amitabh Bachchan (probable) deserve a Bharat Ratna, no matter how good they maybe in their respective fields.
