Is playing Rahane in ODIs affecting his shot selection in Tests?

Rahane is a gun Test match player, probably has excellent shot selection and technique is quite good as well.

But very poor shot selection (Rohit Sharma like batting) in this Test. Selecting him in ODIs (where he tries to manufacture shots and not his natural game) - is it affecting his Test skills?  (sort of like once happened for Murali Vijay also).

Keep him as Test specialist and allow him to find his Test form again. This is worrying that BCCI is messing his Test form (for India's best Test batsman) with thrusting ODI on him. Murali Vijay, Pujara, Rahane are meant to be Test only players, leave them to do what they do best!

100% agree. Ashwin and Rahane are most our consisent players in test cricket , they have one bad game and people are already on their backs. Rahane and Ashwin cant score 100's and take 5 fers every match.

i tend to agree with Ankit

he failed one test. Lets hold off with analysis.

Had a poor match in general dropped catches and all.

No no lets lynch everyone. That's the proper way. All the players should be feathered and tarred.

If you take away the dead-rubber test against NZ , Rahane was sorta average in NZ series.

Look, not all players are cut out for ODIs/T20s...some are Test only players, and no need to mess them up. And read the OP - I said he is a gun Test player.

Fineleg, Since you dont have access to Cricinfo, I've attached Rahanes games for 2015 and 2016. Please go over that and then give your judgement.

So have u passed ur judgement that his odi career is over and he cant improve.

Did playing odi mess up laxman or did playing test mess up yuvraj singh

If ur saying he is gun test player how do u come across something like his shot selection is affected. He made his debut in odi in 2011 n test in 2013 going by ur logic he should have been a mess before his debut.

Rahane made 77 in kolkta n 40 in kanpur, that means avg of above 55 in two test u call that avg

Srsly one test took ur reach at such conclusion, are u going to make diff threads after every test.

I tend to agree Rahane is LOI is not a good thing. However the aim should be to improve India LOI by getting better players in.

Does not mean ODI is affecting Rahane.

rahane has problem defending spinners on front foot neatly...especially if its bouncing...he is undecisive sometimes to play a slightly back pf the good length ball of spinners on backfoot or frontfoot. seem him getting out softly to spinners while pulling in recent times.
but I have no doubt that its mental issue rather than technical. HE is a class act needs to concentrate hard be positive against spinners

Rahane is a brilliant test batsmen, probably one of the best from current lot, he is technically sound, but he did not play his natural game also his failure in ODI series and all that hoopla of strike rotation is affecting him as he is trying to play risky strokes also he needs to develop his back foot game as he is over reliant on front foot n on turning wkts he needs to use the crease a bit more, he certainly has all the skills n has been performing very well in tests

I've been saying Rahane should be out of ODI squad for a while now. Just emphasizing the same viewpoint, not a different point.

Two different things.

Just decide on what you really want to whine about? Is it about Rahane not being a good ODI player or Rahane losing his Test form (factually incorrect)?

Not sure about ODI affecting his shot selection, his performances have been quite good in Tests

What I did notice was that he was having some trouble with the short ball during the NZ series, I did not see today's match so not sure if it happened today but its something he has think about, he seems like an instinctive shot player to the short ball not sure if he has mentally made the transition to not play pull/hook
