Should Jayant Yadav bat above Saha (when he is back) and above Ravindra Jadeja?

Just below Ashwin?

Yes, he could. But, whether he would is a diff question

Jadeja is fine where he is.  Good counterattacker between Ash's solidity and Jayant after hm - good balance to the order.  Jadeja did well today - yes he got out going for a big loft - but he batted well.  And his counterattack changed the momentum and direction of the game, "bigly".

They could always push Jayant up Jaddu and keep Saha below Jaddu.

That would not help Saha's confidence with the bat - I wouldn't mess with the order or Jayant's place in it - if it ain't broken...

The problem is that Jayant's position does not enable us to get the max out of him - at No.9, batting is a real lottery. Even if you do well, your partners can be dismissed easily.

^ Yea thats the problem. JY is capable and needs time (he is a slow batsman, so needs more time) to consolidate and score. At 9, he is too far lower in the order. Jadeja can come at 9 and still score two 6's and a 4 and then get out - thats his ishtyle.

Not in this lineup - good odds that when he gets in, one of the guys - an Ash or a Saha is still there.  Don't underrate Saha's batting - he's at least as capable as Jayant.  Although Jayant "looks" better - I think his drives look more elegant, he's a taller guy...

I'm not underrating Saha - want to see him over Pappu Butterfingers any day. If only BK could do better in Indian conditions, we could have him at 10 and Shami at 11 (one solid lineup with the 11 also having a Test 50).

Jayant at No.9 gives us amazing batting depth.... nothing more frustrating for a team to get us 7 down and then see us adding 100 more runs on a  regular basis.

We must imagine the psychological impact this strategy has on the opposition.

As all our other batters before him are justifying their positions, I don't want to tinker with the batting order.

I'm still not very convinced by Ashwin at 6 - feel it's one place too high for him; ideally Saha should have been able to bat there, but it's 1-2 positions too high for him as well. Yes, he has done well, but a No. 6 is typically a batting allrounder who scores centuries (and Ashwin's have all come against WI).

Disagree quite strongly.  Ash has blossomed as a bat after getting to #6.  Its sparked off his hunger for runs.  He's good enough to bat there.  He should stay there.  He can anchor the lower-lower middle order :p: can't call Saha-Jadeja-Jayant-Bhuvi the tail!

jadeja can be tried at no.6 couple of time... when we are like 300/4
he is potentially better batsman than moeen ali
who knows a 100 can change his career

Our previous No.6 was VVS (or Ganguly) - I'd not put Ashwin in their caliber with the bat. In most cases, the No.6 has to display a career avg in the high 30s (preferably low 40s) and score some 100s. Let's see how he continues to perform (in this series, the avg is around 40).

It is ok in India.

Hoping that we will develop someone like a Pant when we tour abroad, who can bat at No.6.    Problem will be the SA tour in November 2017  when the new keeper will not be ready.

For that tour...Ashwin, Pandya, Saha and Bhuvi will have to be No.6 to No.9

Why Pandya? One good innings against Aus A should not guarantee overseas selection. Ashwin at 6, Saha at 7 seem certain. Remains to be seen who 8 and 9 will be (10 and 11 will be Shami and Ummi I guess).

Yes, but there's more than one way to structure a batting line-up.  The current method is working really well for us - and for it to continue doing so, it isn't absolutely necessary that Ash keep getting 100s - If we are averaging about 150 runs from the last 5 wickets as a group - that's pretty awesome.  Especially playing 5 bowlers, and also compared to what we used to do earlier.

I personally prefer the more classical structure that I'd mentioned earlier. Having too many allrounders can lead to collapses at times in unfamiliar conditions (Eng bat till 10 in many cases but too many bits-and-pieces players). The current Indian lineup is okay for Ind conditions, but I don't know how it will work abroad,

Pandya will certainly play in tests outside Asia if fit.

Our team management has clearly hinted that they are looking to play a seamer all-rounder out of Asia and his inclusion in the test squad was to groom him for that.

His role will be the 5th bowler...seaming-all-rounder....and he is the only option we have. A pure bowler or a pure batsman will not do.

He will take on the role that Jayant Yadav is performing in Asia.
