When Rahane scores them at SR 109 compared to Pant 59 at SR 163

The selection meeting are bloody pig headed blind and dumb if they cannot see that this talent needs to be carefully groomed under Dhoni and Kohli. Especially as he a wicketkeeper he can learn so much from Dhoni today both in keeping and batting.

 

I would rather have Pant open the innings and score 30 runs off 20 balls then to see Rahane score 30 off 40 balls. It will happen bookmark this.

There is no 'secret skills' to wicketkeeping. but there is a LOT of practice involved, getting your body ready for the longer format. Which is reflected by the fact that except for prodigious keeping talents, no wicket keeper plays international cricket just 1 year after debuting in domestic cricket.

best thing for Pant would be to NOT fast-track him. Leave him in Ranji for another 2 years, get him to work on his technique and fitness as no amount of talking to Kumble/Dhoni is going to make him stronger in the back or get his timing to rising to spinners right. But practice will.

When would selectors accept he is NOT an ODI batsman? and "fitting him into ODIs" affects his Test batting as well

Best thing for Pant would be to debut as a batsman while Dhoni is still around.  Hit a few memorable cameos and build up a reservoir of self-confidence, and a bit of a long rope for an extended run.  Then, he can take the gloves in LOI, and hopefully be good enough to keep the job long-term, and maybe even proficient enough to force his way into the test setup.  

 

He does have Ishan Kishan hot on his heels - I know Rishabh had the spectacular batting numbers this Ranji trophy, but if you put those aside, Kishan has been pretty good with the bat as well.

 

Its Dhoni and Karthik redux almost, and thank god for that.  These days, top teams can't dominate unless they have a class 'keeper who is good enough to bat in the top 5.   If Panth/Kishan, Hardik Pandya, Shami, Bhuvi blossom into their full potential and beyond, dreams of seeing India dominate test cricket home and away can come true.  

 

We've had a few false dawns in recent history though, with a young sreesanth, Irfan, Rp etc in the mid-2000s.  But somehow, I'm more expectant this time around.  Maybe a bit of wishful thinking, but interesting times ahead for India fans to be sure!

I'd agree with this, if Pant was older and all he needed was confidence in his game.

But Pant is 19-20 years old.The thing he needs most is more 4 day games to strengthen his technique and condition his back to the rigours of wicketkeeping.

These days top teams want a keeper who can bat, but as we can see with Bairstow, Akmal, Sehzad, etc. keepers who can bat very well but can't keep well are a liability to the team.

I think overexposure is a bigger threat to Pant than it was to Irfan, RP, etc. If you notice in history of cricket, there are quite a few bowlers who had great careers debuting just after 1 season of FC cricket. Yet, there isn't a single wicketkeeper who debuted after 1 season of FC cricket and has gone on to be a great keeper. 

Does that not strike you as a red flag ?

We're on the same page as far as Panth's development for test cricket is concerned.  There's another thread calling for Panth as test keeper where I repeatedly posted on the need for patience and the challenges and requirements of being a test keeper, leading to a lot of bashing by pant-gasming panth fans. :)

We are wasting time with likes of Rahane and Yuvraj when we could be giving likes of Pant, Hooda, Iyer, Sarfraz khan (I'm big on him as he has that 'never say die attitude' similar to Kohli and Gambhir), Jadhav etc. chances to cement their spot for CT and WC. We all know what Rahane is gonna do - score those 20s, 30s or 40s at max at a poor SR. Rahane simply doesn't have the game to score big and tear apart the bowling when he's set. Whether he's on 20, 30 or 60 he plays the same way and at a similar SR.
