Has Varun Aaron improved as a First class bowler?

Recommended Posts

When he made his debut, he didn't have good FC season under his belt. IIRC he was averaging 40 in FC cricket. He had pace and caught the limelight which fast tracked his selection in Indian cricket team.

It seems that he has been doing well in FC cricket recently. He has taken 100 wickets at avg of 29.95 in 37 FC matches excluding tests. Those are decent numbers.

It appears that his FC performance has been improving with time. This Ranji season hasn't been good for him so far. Let's see if he can do better.

Question is what is his pace? Hope it is not the case of him “maturing” by becoming a line and length Trundler like Vinay and Pankaj for good retruns.

Anyway looks like he hasn’t done well this season so far.

He would still be good if he does that, he could always up the tempo when needed and hit he high 140's like he does in IPL.

His profligacy is supremely impressive.

he used to setup folks with some quick bouncers and an inswinger, i remember the delivery to Amla.

But had obvious control issues in his early days, Yadav was similar but now Yadav has matured. Aaron never got a chance to mature, he was relegated to domestics. He is not helping himself either he just needs a good season to get back into national reckoning.

When he made his ODI debut vs England he was pretty accurate. He started getting wayward once he changed his action post injury. Watch the below video of him bowling during his early years. So much wasted potential.

I can’t help but want to say that bowling stats in ranji and in domestic cricket in general doesn’t paint full picture. A lot of these bowlers do not play with the best slip fielders and play with pathetic fielders at times who are standing tired and just waiting for their batting to come and do not throw themselves on the field at times. Same bowlers might take more wickets when playing with Indian team or with better fielding unit then what they do with their current Ranji teams.
