Is current fielding unit our one of the worst in terms of catching?

They have good atheletes and very good fielders in outside the 30 yard circle.

Ground fielding on average is better than best of fielders in past.

 

However close in fielders drop too many catches and there aren't many safe catchers.

 

There was a time when Kohli had almost 50% drop rate.

In current team only Rahane is a complete fielder - ground, catching, throws, close-in etc. Maybe they can try Jadeja at close in when he is not in the middle of a spell.

Even outside the 30 yard circle,  its just Yadav, Jadeja and Kohli who are world class. Pandya can be athletic too. The rest are average. Rahane's a decent slip fielder only against spinners. The slip cordon is without doubt the worst among the top sides.

That was an aging unit and but before 2010 we were better in this department.

jadeja dropped a sitter at third slip against England in the first test match i think of the bowling of Umesh Yadav. He is not that good of a slip fielder. 

I dont know what happened to Ashwin, he used to be pretty good there

How ironic? Rahane is the only complete fielder but he shouldn't be in the team for his batting (in Indian conditions)

Too early to call IMO. Scored 188 against NZ 4 matches ago. He'll work it out.

all out for 100.  And then 3, maybe 4 lives to their main bat.  If you take one of the early ones, Aus could have been all out by now.  Rahane was dismissed off a brilliant take by Steve Smith, while India have ball deflecting gloves on for Vijay and his buddy.    Hard to see how India claw back into this game now.   All over bar the formalities.  Maybe a sliver of hope if we are chasing less than 350.

Close-in catching, especially the slip catching is a huge concern. India gotta address this issue if they want to succeed away from home.

Absolutely the worst when it comes to slip catching. And in test matches slip catching is what fielding's all about.
