Australia choking the runs, India shows little intent to score runs

But, there were some loose balls as always and some of them were not put away.   It is usually a mindset issue.

 

Their bowling has looked more accurate than it has been due to our batting approach.

This pitch was made for someone like Kohli with bounce and pace. Pity he got injured at such an inopportune time. Now we somehow need to score another 100 odd else match's Australi'a to lose.

No one expects them to bat at RR of 4, it shouldn't be below 3 in any case.

We are playing at home and are facing likes of O'Keefe and Lyon for the most part. Surely we should be able to score at a RR of around 3-3.5 over against them. Being negative and going into a shell is what creates problems for us as we don't know what to do even when we get loose deliveries. Our batsmen have shown no initiative whatsoever the entire series and have been dictated to by Aussie bowlers. It cost us the Ranchi Test and most likely the current one.

 

locking without any intent to score serves no purpose and puts you and following batsmen under more pressure. It's not as if after blocking the first 20 overs or so our batsmen are taking apart the bowling. They continue to potter around and then get out without a substantial score. Look at the scorecard. Nearly every batsman got a start and played numerous deliveries but at the end of the day we are struggling and behind the eight ball.

To some extent yes, our batsmen are cautious. It is also due to the fact that Lyon and O Keefe are not ordinary,, so taking them on could be risky.

I'm not asking our batsmen to hit them for 4s and 6s. But is it too much to expect our batsmen to try and look for 1s and 2s against Lyon and Keefe? I watched Pujara against Lyon and he was pretty happy blocking him without even looking to score. We play spinners day in day out in domestic cricket. Surely they have to be able to score at a rate of 3.5 against spinners on a decent pitch with some bounce and turn. It's not as if we are playing on a minefield and Lyon & Keefe are re-incarnates of Warne and Murali.

Agree. I guess, it is the fear factor after Pune and Bangalore 1st innings that has forced Indian batsmen to play this way.

Looks like its tough to time the ball against spin on this wicket because of the slow nature. Pujara is quite good at rotating the strike against spinners once he is set. He is the best player of spin in our side, perhaps apart from Kohli. Also, Cummins and Hazlewood bowled some testing spells especially in first session.

 

I still feel if Pujara didnt get out whether we accelerated the RR or not, we would have been in a great position at the end of the day. Now Aussies are a bit ahead. A lot will depend on first session and how much lead India will get.

The new ball is only 2 overs old. We need to see out the first half hour. Cant let Hazlewood and Cummins go through our tail and we end up being 265-270 all out.

You are expecting too much from Jadeja. Their new ball bowling has been awesome compared to ours.

Michael Clarke was talking about the fact that they have all been surprised how Indian batsmen, known for tackling good quality spinners, have been very poor against Lyon.

 

Lyon has said to Clarke that he felt  that  Indian batsmen have not really used their feet enough, have been very defensive and allowed him to bowl a good line and length.  This is what happens with an over defensive attitude.

Our spin game is over-rated like hell. Or maybe not rated these days depending on who you ask.

 

We always depend on 1-2 batsmen to score big runs on turners with some contribution from others here and there.

 

If Vijay and Pujara didn't score, we would have lost at home to Harmer, Tahir and Elgar.

The point discussed here is about batsmen having a positive attitude and taking runs whenever possible, so that the bowler is unable to bowl the exact line and length  that he wants and is put under some pressure.

 

When the batsmen are over-defensive, the bowlers are able to execute their plans perfectly and bowl in the exact areas that they want.

Only Vijay, Rahul, Pujara and Kohli have the skills to do that.

 

Nair is newbie and too inconsistent.

 

Rahane - less said the better.

 

Tail - They will contribute here and there.

 

Amongst those 4, take a deeper look:

 

Rahul - Looks good but will play a stupid shot to get out

 

Vijay - Very skilled but inconsistent.

 

Pujara - Our most consistent Asian bat.

 

Kohli - Will either score mountains or not.

 

So in a while, even when we have skills, either our batsmen are inconsistent or throw away their wickets or have great peaks and lows.

 

Hence the problem. In every series, we only had 2-3 bats who were reliably consistent and mostly it would involve Vijay and Pujara and someone else.

For that, our batsmen have to stay on the crease right?

 

When Kohli ain't playing, Vijay getting out early, we only have 2 bats capable of doing that (barring Nair). Rahul bats quickly. So its only Pujara who is slow.

 

That's our problem. Something or the other happens with our 5 man batting attack.
