Attacks on Africans in Greater Noida racist, India didn’t sufficiently condemn them: Envoys

India didn’t do enough to stop a string of attacks on Africans in Greater Noida last month, a statement by a group of African envoys has said, the first official reaction to the assaults that triggered nationwide condemnation.

A statement by the Heads of African Mission dated March 31 called for a condemnation of the attacks at the highest level in India and demanded an independent investigation by human rights bodies. The document also called the attacks “racist” and xenophobic

“The Heads of African Mission… reviewed the previous instances taken place and concluded that no known, sufficient and visible deterring measures were taken by the government of India,” the statement said.

“As regards the unfortunate incident in Greater Noida, the African Heads of Mission…take note that these reprehensible events, both outstanding and unresolved cases against Africans, weren’t sufficiently condemned by Indian authorities.”

Enraged locals in Greater Noida thrashed several Africans in a burst of fury following the death of a 17-year-old boy of a suspected drug overdose last month. Residents blamed the Africans of plying the youth with drugs.

A purpoted video of the assault went viral on social media that showed locals kicking and punching a Kenyan man, sparking widespread outrage. The government has said it enforced strict security but many Africans report feeling insecure and threatened.

True. North & Western Indians i find tend to be more racist than eastern & Southern Indians. The northie/westies are definitely racist towards Africans and North-eastern 'chinese feature' ones, calling them 'Kalaas and chaptaas '

The envoys have a point.  Least the officials and leaders could have done is made strong statements in support of the African expats.  These guys come to India for studies and work - they are contributing to the Indian economy and are our guests.  You can't expect for a society to change its attitudes overnight, but at least the leaders should be making the right noises as strongly as possible.  You can see that the first instinct of the government is to be defensive instead of manning up.

Don't know about that.  Some innocent Indian who gets attacked overseas is not responsible for mob beatings by ignorant idiots in some other corner of India.  

 

I want the Prime Minister or President of India, along with the Delhi CM and all the bigwigs to make strong clear cut statement about valuing our African guests and reminding people to treat them with respect.   What would that cost?  Nothing.  What would it gain?  So much.

Agree. Otoh, I guess the government is relactunt because of their alleged involment in drug supplying to the students in Noida. The actual trigger was a student died due to drug overdose, and his parents blamed nigerians. My point is only on the mob violence. It conveniently got twisted into a racist attack.

But it was a racist attack.  The ones attacked had nothing to do with the drugs.   Mob violence can never be justified.

Bhai, we all know when black people get beat up in India, 99.999% of the time, its because of race. I've seen it happen with my own two eyes in Noida, where some dude started a fight with a Nigerian dude by calling him 'scammer & black as soot *, BC, MC, etc'.

Targetting people because they are African and committing crimes against them, is by definition,racist.

And then you drag out random African people and beat them up, its racist. How is that not racist ?! The defining criteria for dragging out those Africans is race! When you victimize innocent people by identifying them solely by their race, its racist. Pretty simple.
