I think they'll go with Raina, like for like replacement. If one of the openers or Dhoni get injured then Pant has a chance. But in case of Dhoni they have also named Karthik as standby.

Raina had an exceptional outing in the last ODI series in England. Only time he performed outside subcontinent.

Check how many 100s Gambhir has scored for Delhi in last 3 Ranji seasons.

Gambhir shouldn't even have been selected for test team in first place.

It was a stupid call up and he had his chances and once again showed he is past it.

Rahane has no place in Indian team either.It should have been Pant.

Rohit is one of India's best odi players .His odi form is impeccable.He walks into Indian odi team

He walks into T20I team too. Has done enough to ensure the opening slot. Played 3 good innings even in Australia last year in T20Is.

And he exceptional in ODIs there. Scored heavily in almost every game.

Problem with Rohit in T20s is he is a slow starter and wastes the power play.

 

Rohit and Rahane wasting the first four overs of powerplay in the semi vs WI was one of the major reason(apart from no balls) for our loss .

 

He is too slow a starter for T20s.I would rather have hacks like Tripathi or youngsters like Samson opening in T20s.Those who can go after the bowling from ball one instead of Rohit.

Only player in batting order which will make us suffer is Yuvi. Replace him and squad will look way too stronger. Rest all are good enough.

HE hasnt shown overseas, when did he play there

Pujara was suppose to be th best thing for overseas before he went there n got found out....

U cnt show this less patience with any youngster......specially with such high quality

What if iyer fails in 3-4 games how many will u keep discarding. Player cnt be build like that. Iyer will have A-tour.....let him earn it

Problem is that Nair has looked out of depth against fast bowlers even on Indian pitches and has shown a tendency to be highly inconsistent. It's not just about Tests as this trend has continued over domestic cricket. Take out that 300 and he hasn't done anything in domestic cricket as well. The way he has batted recently he would be a walking wkt outside the subcontinent and with us playing 5 bowlers, we simply can't afford someone like Nair. I would give Iyer a chance in SL and see if he's an improvement coz 6 Tests is still a decent enough run of games for a batsman.

Consistency also matters in international games. Having hacks and losing wkts in powerplay anyway will slow down the innings. Can have one hack as opener. Having two hacks opening the innings may turn disastrous. Having Sehwag opening with Gambhir or Sachin was good. Having two Sehwags opening would have been poor.

They have selected rahane as backup opener. Pant will come in only for dhoni.

Rahane is backup in case someone is not able to do well. But in case of an injury Pant will come in to still have 3 openers in squad.

It's not about the amount of runs Nair has scored in the remaining innings. It's the way he has got out and found difficulty in spending time in middle that makes him not eligible for a test berth.
