Cricketics Posted November 25, 2017 Posted November 25, 2017 The forthcoming tour of South Africa will be the third tour to South Africa for Cheteshwar Pujara. I remember India opted to take him and play him along side the greats of the game Tendulkar, Dravid and Laxman. A young 22 year old Pujara was part of the test series and Played 2 of the three test matches. Pujara wasn’t great on that tour, did not score much but did learn a lot while in th little pship with Tendulkar and you could see that on the next tour where he was our highest scorer in the next South African tour. We must use Iyer now and take him to South Africa. It is important time to groom a youngster into test side so he can be ready for the England and South African tour which is to come. I think there is a room for him to even olay in the 2nd or 3rd test if our other options are not working. Iyer has scored a lot of runs and its time for India to give him that big break which he needs. Lets not worry about him failing, because he could turn out to be another solid batsman by the time 2018 ends. sandeep 1
King Tendulkar Posted November 25, 2017 Posted November 25, 2017 Disagree . Sod 2018 . Use home tests to groom newbies this sa series is there for takeing . Can we achieve history and win . Pick the best squad to perform in this series . If iyer is part of that on merit then great . But not interested in picking anyone with eye on future ps player iyer in odis first v sl and take it from there sandeep 1

Hence I mentioned to keep him him in squad. Keep him in the squad as back up to Pandya and one of the two openers. If Vijay or Rahul fail together in both the tests or Pandya is not working, we must try to strengthen our batting and Iyer will make it stronger. We will be experimenting woth Pandya too, so if that move does not work, we will have to go for an extra batsman may be. I rather have Iyer in the squad than Sharma honestly.
bowl_out Posted November 25, 2017 Posted November 25, 2017 Iyer doesn't seem to be in the scheme of things for Tests yet, and SA tour is one Test match away.. I'd instead have the team pick Vijay Shankar in the third test to give him a bit of international exposure before SA.. Even then, Pandya might be the first choice and VS might not feature in the squad..
fineleg Posted November 25, 2017 Posted November 25, 2017 kohli will not give chances to rookies in squad
Sooda Posted November 25, 2017 Posted November 25, 2017 If Mumbai are still playing Ranji trophy he'd be better off staying at home and actually playing. Dhawan and Rohit will be backup batsmen

It also depends how Shastri thinks and the management. Similarly Ganguly or Dhoni never used to take every action alone. John Wright and Kirsten played crucial role in coming up with the combination. Kohli will have his majority players he want and then few players are pushed by selectors or coach and Iyer should be one of them.
wanted_desi Posted November 26, 2017 Posted November 26, 2017 He can only get in if Rohit Fails horribly in South Africa.

vvvslaxman Posted November 26, 2017 Posted November 26, 2017 He is too flashy for my liking. He likes to ball on the up and in the air more often than not. He can score a quick 80 or 90 or he can get out soon. He has hit like 75 sixes in 54 first-class matches. That kinda underlines how he approaches the game. Does he have a game to adapt when stroke making is not conducive? How good is his defense? All those things are little iffy at this point.
Laaloo Posted November 26, 2017 Posted November 26, 2017 Don't know about tests but he definitely should be in the ODI team for South Africa.

He got a double hundred against Australia when they toured India recently and constructed a good century. These performances followed by the ones for India A on tour has only made him a better batsman and if we can develop him based on his recent exploits, it will only help him in the longer run. Not many players score a double hundred against Australia and he managed to do it. He should be given a chance. He is not 16-17. He is actually a matured cricketer now who has seen failures in different formats and learned from those mistakes.

We did that mistake last time , its nothing short of a miracle that the likes of Rahane did well inspite of having played only 1 home test for India . As much as I critisize Rohit , its partly the reason he failed . King Tendulkar 1
cricketpitch Posted November 26, 2017 Posted November 26, 2017 Now with Virat's buddy Rohit scoring a meaningless hundred against SL, he will be on the plane to SA. Iyer or for that matter any young player is not going to be selected. India already have to pick Dhawan, Rahul and Vijay in the 15 and Rohit also will be in the 15. So below is what the Squad will look like: Murali Vijay Shikhar Dhawan Lokesh Rahul C Pujara A Rahane V Kohli (c) Rohit Sharma W Saha (Wk) B Kumar R Ashwin R Jadeja I Sharma M Shami U Yadav H Pandya That will be the 15, where will India fit in Iyer or any young player in the Squad? Also R Sharma did not fail because of lack of home test, he was simply not good enough. These days players play lots of ODI cricket all over the world and they have enough exposure to foreign conditions than the players of the past. R Sharma was playing cricket for 5 years before his first overseas test tour. There is no excuse for his failures.
