If you notice, Srinath kept on improving and jumping places after 20 matches. Similar with all the fast bowlers. Shows our fast bowlers mature late due to no guidance. Pity Srinath was not given chance when he was young. he might have had a very respectable career had he played 100 matches going by the improvement in the nos.

Excellent point.  Both Zaheer and Srinath really blossomed in the latter half of their careers.  I think Shami has the potential to put up some really solid career numbers, because his early returns are quite decent.  Bhuvi's career numbers are still suffering from that 1 test he played in Australia.

His quality and longevity are impressive.  But if you look at Zaheer's last 30 odd tests, he was quite impressive.

Shami's quality start is well represented in the graph.   You can see him comfortably ahead of the rest of the pack from the 15 test mark.   If he stays fit for all of next year's test cricket, he has a chance to pick up close to 50 wickets.   

 

It will be very interesting to re-visit these statistics 12 months from now.

Shami started pretty well , he has best chance to emulate Kapil provided he remains fit.

There is no way Shami stays fit enough to even play half the number of tests that Kapil did.   That's not happening.  But he can still end up with quality numbers.   Problem is, I can't even recall the last time the guy managed to play back to back tests.

He clearly was out of his depth in test cricket for a majority of those tests - i.e. not good enough.  In another country, with better fast bowling reserves, he may not have made it to the national team that early, if at all.   Based on his recent performances, there's a slight hope that he can contribute meaningfully as 3rd pacer, especially on away tours.

Umesh had the most number of wickets after first 10 tests and that is why we had high hopes from him but then he could pick 62 in the next 26.

Shami is the only current pacer with over 3 wickets per test.
