didnt see India's innings - everyone raising doubts over iyer ability against short pitch bowling so did it happen again?

What is the doubt ?

We have discussed this issue time and again ... and it is the precise reason why I think we should try Gill at 4 in ODIs atleast and Iyer is better at 5.

Every expert will say it as doubt in open till it gets badly exploited which hasnt happen till now. Im sure  a smart guy like Zak knws how bad it can get but he wont n shudnt say in open as well

A weakness is a weakness.

Does not mean he has to be dropped if he is performing.

It means he has to work on that weakness ... and maybe his position may need changing a bit.

no doesnt mean they have to be dropped, weakness doesnt matter as long as player is scoring runs. But its an alert for things to come so they shud be prepared for it

As Zak rightly mentioned if its spotted early time for batting coaches to start work on it early before it gets worse

That's what I said.

But it is not a doubt then.

doubt is coz teams havent fully exploited it yet and there are signs , even against spinner hard length has caused him issue and laxman also pointed out with evidence that spinner bowling 85k+ is causing him issue.

Hence the doubt that there are areas of concern and teams have started to look at it .

Now it remains to be seen how they exploit it and how he comes against it

Doubt wont lead to him or anyone being dropped its just an alert sign. Lucky for him he has the best guy as his IPL coach to help him with this .

Manish Pandey had a great series, did well when called upon. Rahul obviously the star of the show and Rohit also somewhat. Rest all were meh. Scored below par in 3 of the 5 matches.

We are still missing a fluent strokemaker beyond a top 3. Iyer's goto against pace is to make room by that shuffle beyond leg stump, which the bowlers have already figured out. He has to learn different ways of scoring fast.

This series has raised more questions than answers as far as the batting is concerned.

The moment the Aussie bowlers are being counter-attacked, their line and length are becoming worse and pressure is being released.

This is what happens.

We saw it in the last 5 overs yesterday night when Gill was batting.

Seeing it now with Pant.

But most of our top batters are batting too meekly.

We need 4 out of the top 7 to be counter-attacking batsmen.

Gill

Kohli

Pant

Jadeja / Hardik

And work on Shaw's defensive weaknesses to make him ready.

Our target batting line-up in tests could be

1. Padikkal ... LHB / Shaw ... Stroke-player

2. Pujara ... Consolidator

3. Gill ... Stroke-player

4. Kohli ... Stroke-player + Consolidator

5. Rahane / Vihari ... Consolidator

6. Pant ... LHB ... Stroke-player

7. Jadeja  ...  LHB / Hardik ... Stroke-player

*  Thus line-up combines both stroke players and consolidators ... in alternating positions.

* This line up has both RHB and LHB

Worth noting that no other overseas player has recorded eight or more successive more 25+ scores on a trot than Pant - cricinfo

The ease with which Pant was batting today against quality bowlers in tough batting conditions ... he should be in considered as a specialist batsman even if the TM somehow want to play Kirmani or Farooq Engineer for their keeping skills.

Pant was driving and pulling Cummins ( in full flow ) with ease.

Anyone who drops him from this test batting line-up, does not understand cricket.

The way Aussies bowled and looking at the conditions we did well to get close to 200.

Most batting line ups or even ours on any other day would fold for much lesser.

And this has happened because we have combined counter-attacking batsmen and consolidators in this line up.

Some have held up their end while others have scored.

It is this mix which is important.

I feel that Pujara needs to open.

He comes in to bat within the first 3 overs anyway.

He is the best person to blunt the new ball and take the shine off  ... and that has been his role.

No point losing a mandatory wicket upfront. The same batsman may contribute better with an older ball.

agree ill have shubhman at 3, if he wants to blunt the new ball do same role like aakash chopra and bangar use to

Technically he is so good for a relative new comer. I mean looking at the likes of Shaw and even Gill to an extent..his game seems rolls royce. Just need to fix his brain fades.
