G_B_ Posted December 23, 2018 Posted December 23, 2018 i guess it depends on the pitches. If you have a deck which differentiates good from average packing yourself with allrounders will not work. It will also depend post Anderson. Even though he does not take wickets he keeps one end tied up. Not going to be easy if your allrounders keep leaking runs. Ridgepi 1
G_B_ Posted December 23, 2018 Posted December 23, 2018 If i am being frank, all what sides need is a proper allrounder. Somebody who is a proper bat home and away in the top 7 and can bowl 15-20 overs in an innings picking up 1/2 wickets without leaking runs. Thats all you need. BrantFUGH 1
JourneyMan Posted December 23, 2018 Posted December 23, 2018 No, its a quick fix. Teams that dominated consistently like WI in the 80s and Aus in the 90s had very good batsmen and very good bowlers, both of whom would easily handle today's all rounders. Ridgepi 1
ShoonyaSifar Posted December 23, 2018 Posted December 23, 2018 (edited) All this hype for winning a series in SL (which was a great achievement but SL were without Chandimal and Herath). Just early this year, they got thrashed in England and NZ, could not beat Pakistan at home. Before that they barely survived in BD and got thrashed in India. They have been dominant in the last two series but is that enough to make such claims about their approach? As as of now, in their last played series, they have lost to SL and failed to beat Pakistan and NZ at home, have lost to Aus, Ind, Pak and NZ away from home and drawn in WI and BD. Barring a series win in SA, that’s a pretty mediocre record. Next they play in WI, who have a very strong bowling line up for home conditions. Don’t be surprised if Eng struggle there once again. zen Posted December 23, 2018 Posted December 23, 2018 You don't play specialists or AR for the sake of playing them. It would depend upon the quality available For e.g. if you have specialists such as McGrath, Warne, Hayden, Pointing, Ambrose, Lara, etc., you play them if you have specialists such as Rohit, Rahane, KL, Vijay, Umesh, Bhuvi, etc., it does not matter if the AR is relatively close to them in performance

Should teams look to develop more AR than specialists? England has systematically tried to prefer AR over specialists at grassroot level. No one is McGrath or Vijay at age of 15. What they have done for a decade now is that they give chances to bowlers who can bat a bit in junior cricket, FC cricket. That has resulted in pool of cricketers who are capable in more than one domain. Someone like Bumrah is more likely eliminated at club level, age group level or county level itself. They are asking if this is how teams should go. Start with AR and groom them only. Ridgepi and BrantFUGH 1 1

When picking an 11, my preference is to optimize the 5 specialist batting and 4 specialist bowling slots first by picking the best in those departments. And then adjust the remaining two slots based on strengths and weaknesses to accommodate : The best WK or the WK who can bat too (depending on form too) A specialist bowler or batsman or the AR Therefore, I would focus on developing players for their primary skills first
MechEng Posted December 23, 2018 Posted December 23, 2018 Never liked all rounders, they are basically cricketers with identity issues An all rounder is like a dish having sour, sweet, hot, bitter and all other tastes put together.
Khota Posted December 23, 2018 Posted December 23, 2018 A team needs zero allrounders. Can someone remind me what exactly has England won so far?
wanted_desi Posted December 23, 2018 Posted December 23, 2018 Those allrounders won't be able to take few wickets in India. BrantFUGH 1
rtmohanlal Posted December 24, 2018 Posted December 24, 2018 If the team possess an all conditional batting line up with lots of variety like , almost equal mix of left right handed, aggressive- defensive, very good - great ( all avg:ing 40s to high 50s) etc etc, a very-good to great wk, 4 specialist bowlers that can take wkts any where in all conditions collectively then all rounders are not needed. This was the basic template of both the GOAT teams , namely WI of 80s & AUS of late 90s.What this does is that, even these specialists too can do a bit of other discipline duties too if needed. Viv, Marshall,M.Waugh,S,Waugh,Warne etc etc were prime examples of that .. Otherwise with a team like 'Inda of now a days' where we have virtually 2.5 batsmen only ( out of 6) we need 'horse for courses' all rounders. Ridgepi 1

How did McGrath and Vijay end up in the same sentence?
