There is a space between greatest of the generation where Kohli stakes a claim and being just another exciting cricketer.

 

I would say he falls in the league of legends/hall of famers where multiple players make it in each generation.

He is one of the greatest batsmen ever.  Yes we dont know exactly why he retired, but to suggest a guy who held the record for most consecutive test appearances and was make shift keeper for a lot of it , make shift opener in ODIs too... is selfish, is silly. What he is doing is no more selfish than our greats - Kapil- playing well after their sell by dates. He was well in his 30s struggling with his back when started cutting down on appearences. Retirement is a personal choice, ABDVs fault is that he is still very good, thats why people are saying he retired "at his peak" when he clearly is not. 

 

I accept that what does leave a sour taste is his claim of being tired when retiring but then signing up for various t20 leagues. But after all he's done for SA why begrudge him an easy pay day. 

 

 

This was him as far back as Jan 2017... talking about taking a break until his the 2018 series against India and Australia, which were his last

Very Good player but by no means an ATG he is made out to be. Chickened our and ran away. More respect to some of the WI free lancers like Gayle and Russell especially Gayle with an ailing body and relatively declining skills is giving it his all. 

He's Arguably a better test bat than LOI one, that choker claim is ludicrous...check out the top 10 or 15 highest 4 innings chases he must be the only batsman to have played a key role in two of them...

People are mocking him and questioning this guy's character, when all thru his career he filled in any role his team needed at that juncture.This guy played 100 consecutive tests, the only thing he did wrong was even in his retirement he  still remained the best batsman for SA.

People mocking ABD and now all of a sudden writing off his illustrious and amazing career don't understand the game or haven't played any form of cricket to know how much impact he had on the game and on his team. He is one of the legends of the game. He has scored bucket load of runs not just for his clubs but for his country. Don't just dance to the current tunes and forget that he has been a stalwart in this game.

This. Obviously Had he been past his sell by date, nothing would be said. His fault is being very good despite being 35 and hit with injuries.

He put his heart and soul in last world cup.Where stupid politics denied him the chance for the glory. Jofra Archer is playing for England at the expense of few other players who played with the team for four years.Why becuase he is simply better than the tguy who has he has replaced.

 

It is world cup , if guy like AB says I want to play and your team is not loaded with talent, you thank your lucky stars and select him.These selectors  like Zodi are morons, we have one in MSK who thinks Karthik is better player than Pant.It is not a slight on one player who will miss out but it is about 14 other players who will get better once AB becomes their team mate.

AB Devilliers is one of the legend of the game. No doubt about that. A few events in the last few days of his career  can never change that. He has been the complete batsman of this generation  avg:ing over 40 in tests in all countries he played in, avg:ing 50+ in one dayers with uniform record in all nations, 100+ str: in one dayers ,  brilliant performances in world cup etc etc.

AB was shamed a lot for picking & choosing the series & formats in which he wanted to play.He had been having lots of back problems & wanted to avoid major injuries.He had the option of either playing in every series or retire.If he would have been allowed by their management to pick & choose,he might not have taken the decision to retire.

Playing in T20s has lower fitness requirements than ODIs,which have become extended versions of T20s due to high scoring games. People can accuse him for being greedy. But he has every right to take that decision.

The guy gave everything for his team in most of the matches.Calling him selfish is just over the top.

 

 

I reiterate the selfish tag. Retiring because his body and mind cannot hold up any longer is not selfish. But thinking that he can just waltz back out of retirement into the team just in time for the world cup is selfish and disrespectful towards those that are in the team and slogging everyday. Where was he when SL beat SA in SA in a test series? Did he offer to come back then? There have been unretirements before, Imran Khan being the most famous. He came back because he was requested to, not the other way around. And he came back for a test series, not a world cup.
