1983: Beat Eng comprehensively. And then the WI in final

1987: Lost to Eng in SF

1996: Lost to SL in SF

2003: Beat Kenya in SF and lost to Aus in F

2011: Beat whipping boys Pak in SF and SL in F

2015: Lost to Aus in SF

2019: Lost to NZ in SF

  • Except in 1983, an outlier event, Ind has usually defeated minnows and Asian teams
  • Usually, when Ind loses against non Asian teams, it is smashed badly
  • Usually, we are chasing against the non-Asian teams
  • People who have been doing well in the group games, tend to fail except on a few occasions
  • How do we improve our win % against non-Asian teams?

Despite that record our captain decided to chase in 2017 CT :hatsoff:. Also to  add we pulled of one of the greatest wins defending in 1983 and also in the 2007 WT20 and 1985 world championship and 2013 Ct

Decision to bowl was terrible in CT 2017 Final. Maybe Kohli was too chilled out.

We couldn't defend 330+ against Sri Lanka at the same ground earlier in the tournament. So, it's unfair to criticize Kohli for that decisions. Yes, you could argue that the pressure of chasing a total in a final could be there but I think we can give the benefit of doubt to him.

You do remember Pak's history while chasing though don't you? Of the top 4 or 5 cricketing nations they're by far the worst chasers, heck a stronger team in 2011 couldn't chase a below par total in the WC SF! No mater how you put it, the decision to bowl was diabolical

No team has chased a 310+ score in history of any big final. And Pakistan are not Sri Lanka and have never ever chased well

History doesn't matter in sport.

Pak were chasing totals comfortably in that tournament and their bowlers were restricting the teams to 230-240 type totals regularly using reverse swing with the older ball. It was not a bad decision to bowl first at all. Bumrah's noball completely turned the tide and we never got back in it.

And how are you so sure that we would have made 310+ if we batted first ?

No I am saying chasing in an ICC final is retarded. Statistically overwhelmingly favors team batting first

And with Pakistan you dont need 310, even 250 and we would have won. No way ciuld fakhat etc have chased under pressure, they would throw their wickets away.

I used the 310 example as previous poster was talking about sri lanka chasing 330

I think @Norman has a point.

If we had toned india's total down to 250-260 then likes of Mian Malik and Hafeez would have ensured the chase since they are kings of these modest chases.
