We gave good fight to aus in 2000s when we didnt have yuvi at peak , dhoni, kohli, bumrah, zak at peak, kapil . All these factors count. We didnt have good all round fielding unit or running either which teams like aus, sa, nz used to their advantage. Now looks at our ATG fielding side Yuvi, kapil, kohli, rohit Dhoni with spinners cud create wkts in that small fractions Even the debatable spots have some good fielders like azhar, ravi jadeja, ajay jadeja. Death bowling wud be miles better then it used it. All these factors combine it wud be a bloody good contest. Great odi sides have number of factors working for them n i see those factors work when u make ATG sides.

Ashwin n jadeja suffered due to rule change of 4 fielders n 2 new balls which most spinners in that list in didnt have to Spinner becomes a factor when ur pace bowler do the job at top, if they dont he ll come in mostly when opposition is in good position. Its a team game every factor helps other. A good fielding side will also always help choke runs. Here a peak Lillee-Starc-Lee are all bowling at 150+, Warne turning balls miles (and improving his avg in an ATG set up), and McGrath at his accurate best

Gollum Posted April 10, 2020 Posted April 10, 2020 (edited) How about Lanka ATG XI? Less fancied side but great ICC tournament record, even though they were late to the party, 3 WC finals, only Aus has made more finals in the last 3 decades when popularity of ODI has been at a different level compared to the 70s/80s !!!! Jayasuriya Dilshan Aravinda Sanga (wk) Mahela Ranatunga (c) Angelo Vaas Kulasekara Malinga Murali 12th man: Mahanama or Chandana, both great fielders Almost all these players have stellar records against India. Arjuna as skipper will make them stronger than sum of their parts, inspirational leader and someone who knew how to set tactical fields, maximize his bowling resources esp spinners (even better than Dhoni tbh), great fighter as well...once took his team to victory with a broken hand. 35-40 overs of Vaas, Kulasekara, Malinga, Murali and the remaining shared by Sanath, Silva, Dilshan, Angelo, Arjuna (has a MOM against India courtesy his bowling when we were 2x world champs LINK), bat deep, big match players.... @Ankit_sharma03 might open a new thread about Indo-SL contest and our possible XI, can explore it in detail then. Thought I would post their XI here since I am too bored , no easy matches against non-Bangla opponents. Edited April 10, 2020 by Gollum
maniac Posted April 10, 2020 Posted April 10, 2020 pretty much same Nzl team as the Op Some names that can be considered are G.Turner for opener C.Mcmillian for middle order M.Gutpill for opener Rest pick themselves. maniac Posted April 10, 2020 Posted April 10, 2020 Problem with Picking ATG X1 for teams like Nzl and Srilanka Is going to be a challenge. Usually they have a lot of freak players who come from nowhere and help them win or compete in big games but then fade away. There was this left armer Geoff Allott I think it was it O Connor or something who ran through teams in the 1999 WC and then faded away. Similarly guys like Greatbatch,Harris,Dipak Patel just raise their games when it matters. Same thing for Srilanka. Kalu had a purple patch during 1996-1997 and then faded away. A guy like Mendis comes from nowhere and runs through line ups. That guy who played that knock in SA will never be able to pull of such heists ever. Chandimal played a blunder against India and was supposed to be the next big thing but today he is captain sometimes and dropped sometimes. They are very similar in nature small pool of players, a pretty strong domestic system and players who fit a certain role and can be utility cricketers.

But there also i think once we had raina, dhoni, gambhir india did win specially at that time they murali mendis who recently destroyed our seniors in test series. Beyond vaas, murali , malinga our batsman can really destroy other bowlers. Kohli, dhoni both played malinga very well Gambhir, dhoni, raina, kohli use to play murali well and i doubt even rohit once set wud have a problem. SL i felt lost the mental edge to us post dhoni 183 , that just send a message to them that murali can be played smartly. And in 2008 cb series when gambhir played him brilliantly the fear of murali just went away. And in 2012 kohli destroyed malinga which ended malinga edge as well. Vaas at peak shud be a problem Biggest threat wud be sanath - if our team figures out how to get him it shudnt be a problem. I wud play ashwin against them as he use to do well against lanka n they have 3 lefties to ATG Sl side another issue is no firepower in lower middle order.

In Aus, SL had a tremendous record...against that legendary side. Even on pattas esp those in SC I think they will trouble other ATG sides. Quote Kohli, dhoni both played malinga very well Yes but Malinga can still outwit our batsmen, like he did in the WT20 final...not ODI but you get the picture. Quote Gambhir, dhoni, raina, kohli use to play murali well and i doubt even rohit once set wud have a problem. But they played an old and declining Murali, not peak Murali. Maybe 1/2 series in mid 2000s our batsmen played him well but not enough to conclude. Sachin and UV would struggle against him in early 2000s, how many times his overs would swing the match in SL's favor. Quote SL i felt lost the mental edge to us post dhoni 183 , that just send a message to them that murali can be played smartly. And in 2008 cb series when gambhir played him brilliantly the fear of murali just went away. And in 2012 kohli destroyed malinga which ended malinga edge as well. But many of their players are from 90s and early 00s......that time they had a mental edge over us. The likes of Aravinda, Ranatunga, Sanath, Vaas had great memories against us. Also they hold the edge in ICC events...except the 2011 final they have mostly beaten us in the big matches, in 2017 CT their weak side destroyed our confidence in setting totals, led to that toss decision in F. If we apply your logic then Vaas had upper hand over Sachin, Murali over UV, Sanath and Aravinda over most of our bowlers etc....works both ways. Quote Vaas at peak shud be a problem Yup. Quote Biggest threat wud be sanath - if our team figures out how to get him it shudnt be a problem. And Aravinda. Quote I wud play ashwin against them as he use to do well against lanka n they have 3 lefties to Yeah, they destroyed Kumble and Harbhajan. Quote ATG Sl side another issue is no firepower in lower middle order. They are a side that will consistently maintain tempo instead of depending on last 10-15 overs, they will do more damage in 1st 20 overs compared to other sides. I have India as favorites still, 60:40. Edited April 12, 2020 by Gollum

ATG NZ XI Fleming Nathan astle Williamson Crowe Ross taylor Bmac Chris Cairns Vettori Hadlee Bond Boult 12th man - Jacob Oram Towards to end of his career oram played some devastating knocks and very very handy bowler ATG Ind XI Sachin Rohit Kohli Gambhir/Sehwag Yuvi Dhoni Kapil Dev Kumble Zak Shami/ Sir Jadeja Bumrah 12th man- Sir Jadeja Gambhir sehwag both have great numbers against Nz and both can be used as opener and sachin can be send in middle .Both can be an antidote to vettori in middle overs as well. Making Sehwag open can be risky against boult n bond so better keep him in middle for vettori . Since that one spot is not owned by anyone we can use it horses for courses type. Sri jadeja as 12th man coz he has done well against Nz- avg 46 against them with a s/r of 99 So Can our ATG team beat ATG NZ in a pressure game I would open with Bmac. Fleming has no place in this side, tbh. He as a batsman is a weak link. Will pick Martin Guptil instead.

In 90s, when murli didn't have doosra and chucked less, he used to be treated like trash. Still remember Sidhu manhandling him and then Ganguly doing the same Edited April 13, 2020 by rkt.india

Murali, Harbhajan, the Pakistanis..... Herath>Murali

I still remember how he mercilessly destroyed the so called great Indian middle order in 2002 series. We had no clue whatsoever. Cricket needed more Shane Bond. Such an awesome bowler! The likes of Steyn and Anderson appear toothless in front of him.
