Gollum Posted August 11, 2020 Posted August 11, 2020 If only Azhar weren't a crook, he would be among top favorites for all Indian fans. His humble origins, style (even off-field), artistry, laid back nature and overall demeanour, lazy elegance, achievements...why did he throw it all away? You guys remember Reetinder Singh Sodhi? I never quite understood why he kept getting picked, couldn't bat or bowl well enough to deserve a place. Commentators would heap praise on his fielding, specialist fielder or what? Don't think he was particularly talented in that dept as well, just that he had a lot of heart and kept throwing his body around (while fielding as well as running between wickets), would get bruises every game .

Special GPL to You forgot Akash Chopra, was one of the best close in fielder I have seen from India. Short leg, silly point. nevada 1

Yes just another match against an average opponent and a shot played by a lalloo player in a normal situation and the catch taken running facing towards a rowdy crowd sitting before the boundary line which happens all the time. Just another day, right? Edited August 11, 2020 by maniac Gollum and S_pace 2

Not just the effort/athleticism that went behind it but the mental toughness. Underdog taking on 2x defending champs, meagre total, odds stacked against us, GOAT batsman in God mode taking his side to an easy victory and then everything changed. The mood of the side lifted, had Viv got out in an ordinary way I doubt they would have lost, but the manner of his dismissal must have affected the psyche of our fearsome opponents, not their day, maybe it was destiny etc. Edited August 11, 2020 by Gollum maniac 1

That just makes the victory even more sweeter than it already is :) Any way: Fearless batting, amazing fielding and great skills with the ball- pretty much a template how to play in a final

It might have happened in odi cricket but it changed the face of cricket, shifted the balance. Cricket was never the same after this match which includes test cricket too.
zen Posted August 11, 2020 Posted August 11, 2020 People have seen better catches. To win matches, you are expected to take such catches. From an Indian perspective, there are many key moments in the game including Sandhu getting Greendige out.

Viv Richards himself would have taken that catch easily .... Have you seen Viv fielding clips vs. Aus in 1975 final? Anyways, time for people to also claim that the ball by Sandhu to Greenidge as the greatest ball in the history of cricket Edited August 11, 2020 by zen

Anyways, time for people to also claim that the ball by Sandhu to Greenidge as the greatest wicket in the history of cricket Yes Sandhu’s ball was definitely one of the most impactful inswingers of all time. Why not?

And then we can look into some good shot played by an Indian batsman to claim it as the greatest shot.

Point 1: considering the batsman, the situation, the occasion and also the environment makes that catch that much more difficult. If this was a clip from a practice session, you have a point. Do you have an idea what was there or whose catch was taken or what was the match situation? Point 2: That catch turned the match which turned cricket itself on its head. In fact these are the eras in Indian cricket Lala Amarnath Pre-Pataudi, Gavaskar and the 4 spinners era (post Pataudi) Post Kapil Dev’s catch era (SC becoming a major player) Sachin era ( BCCI having a monopoly on cricket) Post Misbah’s scoop shot era (aka IPL era and T20 era or if you are a Dhoni fan call it the Dhoni era) Ro-Ko era (post Dhoni era) Gollum 1

Greatest shot is already taken :)
