And just 7 tests in India. His average against India in Tests is 28, which is 20 less than his overall average. It is also the lowest average he has against any test playing nations. Looks like those inconsistent poor bowlers did something right against Gilchrist. Gilly was in feast or famine mode in India. Hit two rapid hundreds in a match-winning cause but also had a string of single digit scores. Suhaan and Rightarmfast 2

My point was only that Indian fast bowlers were not poor then. By any standards.
nevada Posted August 17, 2020 Posted August 17, 2020 Gilly for me. People forget that the man he replaced, Ian Healy, was a legend himself with excellent keeping and decent batting credentials. Imagine the pressure and scrutiny of replacing a legend. It took Australia 4 years to find a worthy replacement for Rod Marsh but Gilly made a seamless transition right away. He didn't just thrive under pressure, he tore up and rewrote the selection manual for keepers with his thunderous batting in addition to solid keeping. He was an impactful batsman rewriting the script of many a test match. In ODIs, he has 3 world cups to his name, with impactful performances in 2 world cup finals as an opening batsman. Opening AND keeping in ODIs is not a joke yet he pulled it off like it was nothing. Today's keepers have Gilly to thank for making the WK slot a superstar position instead of an under the radar, mostly thankless one. He is a trendsetter and one of a kind. Also, he started his career at the late age of 28 but still put up outstanding numbers, never going for the grafting style of batting to prop up his average or keep his place safe. How many times did fans cuss him for eating up the overs and overstaying for years together as a player? Close to Zero.

The dude has a 149 in a WC Final. i asked if Dhoni scored in any important matches apart from the two I listed, and you’re quoting me bilateral wins. clutch need not be about 'tournament finals' only. Winning 'bilateral series' for the first time after several attempts too have its importance.India's first bilateral series win in Pakistan was achieved by Dhoni emphatically anchoring & finishing those chases with 2 aggressive 70+ not out scores.Won in AUS by a 2-1 margin only recently after so many attempts. Dhoni anchored with an 87* in the decider 3rd game.
rtmohanlal Posted August 17, 2020 Author Posted August 17, 2020 on a side note .... would place Andy Flower above Dhoni in the list of ATG wicket keepers. Debuting in the 90s and averaging 50+ for a lower ranked team like Zimbabwe, being a good batsman in ODI, he was a champion cricketer too and some one who often gets overlooked in 'ATG cricketer' discussions. so, Gilly > Flower > Dhoni as ATG cricketers.

You mentioned Gilly facing poor bowlers, but he has a bad record against India :) You are equating Prasads average with whole Indian fast bowling being poor is not correct.

Also Dhoni was instrumental in India winning the first ever bilateral ODI series in Pakistan & AUS respectively. His tournament final blast vs SL in Windies ( 15 off 5 balls in last over) too comes into mind. India already won odi series in Pakistan before dhoni debut .

Because other than Srinath, all were poor. I mentioned poor bowlers, not just India but others too like SL, England, NZ etc.
Rasgulla Posted August 18, 2020 Posted August 18, 2020 Big match players both of them. Gilly is amazing keeper to fast bowlers whereas Dhoni is brilliant with spinners and stampings. Dhoni had a captaincy job to do for most of his career. It's tough to chose between two of my fav players but Dhoni might have an edge considering he had multiple jobs to do as a player. Won't be looking at average and all that. Different times they started their career. An absolute pleasure to witness both of them
