Dhoni or Gilchrist .... who was the better cricketer?

Dhoni

https://www.espncricinfo.com/india/content/player/28081.html

Gilchrist

https://www.espncricinfo.com/australia/content/player/5390.html

Both of them played almost similar no: of  test inns. Gilly debuted 7 years before Dhoni, i mean in  slightly more batting difficult  days. Yet he  averaged some 9.5 more than Dhoni at far better str: . That Dhoni averaged only around 33 abroad(home  46) where as Gilly did exactly the opposite by averaging almost 50 abroad(home 46) widens the gap even further in favour of Gilly.

But in ODIs , Dhoni convincingly wins  by averaging  almost 15 more than Gilly. Even more creditably Dhoni was a finisher and a better clutch  player. But Gilly pulls back  a bit in that Dhoni's avg: is a bit inflated by huge no: of not outs. More over Gilly had  better str:(almost 9 difference) that too debuting 7 years before Dhoni.

Both of them were 'great' calibre wicket keepers and nothing much separates them  here.

As a captain, no contest. Dhoni wins hands down.Dhoni belonged to a comparatively weaker team in both formats gives him a bit of weightage as well.

All in all Dhoni's superior credentials in  'matters other than tests'  is still not able to  overcome Gilly 'the superior test batsman by far' especially because tests carries more weightage.

So Gilly has been the better over all cricketer in my book.

Again both of them have been definitely certain choices from ' WK category' for ATG cricketers with out any doubt.Thoughts.....

I will pick gilly. He had ability to dominate in each format of cricket. He averages 50 in test cricket (away conditions) batting at #7. If we compare it to today's fab four, three of them (kohli, kane & root) average 44 or below in away conditions.

yes... that proves as to how great Gilly was as a test batsman.Though inflated a bit by high percentage of not outs and being part of an ATG team, Gilly's

abroad average  in tests at such high str: , that too despite debuting good 7 years before Dhoni, makes him superior as a cricketer beyond doubt.

8 Times not out in 58 innings isn't high. Being part of ATG team doesn't always help. There must have been many times where top order players would score big runs and he wouldn't get chance on easy pitches.

I think dhoni is the GOAT wicketkeeper batsman and finisher in ODIs.

But sorry there's no comparison here,an atg test cricketer will always be miles ahead of an atg odi cricketer.

Kids-t20

Men-odi

Legend-test.

Although dhoni is in the top tier of that men's category but he is a league below the category of legends.

Top 7 indian cricketers ever.

1.Sachin Tendulkar

2.Kapil Dev

3.Sunil Gavaskar

4.Virat Kohli

5.Saurav Ganguly

6.Rahul Dravid

7.Ms dhoni

When bumrah ends his career he will replace sachin as the GOAT indian cricketer (provided that injury doesn't end his career).

Don't by get how Gilchrist played better attacks. Indian fast bowling was poor, English bowling was poor. SA had good bowling throughout. Pak bowling was declining. WI bowling was also declining.

So,by your logic we shouldn't consider any batsman from that Aussie side as an ATG as they didn't have to face best attack of those times?

Ponting,Hayden,Langer,Taylor etc

Dont see how an attack of Srinath, Agarkar, Prasad was poor. Not to forget Kumble. And this was only when Gillie had made his debut. He would later have to play against Zaheer, RP, Sreesanth, Irfan etc.. None of these bowlers could be called poor.

They could be good on their days but weren't really good consistently. No match to today's attack which I will call a good attack and I was talking about test cricket. Apart of Srinath and Zak all others were poor in tests. Zak and Srinath were above average test bowlers. We haven't produced a good test fast bowler in history. Hopefully Bumrah, Shami can change that.

Yes,Srinath,Prasad,Kumble formed a decent attack , seldomly they bowled well as a unit

Srinath was a champ in Indian conditions,so was Kumble....yes they lacked a partner, otherwise it would have been considered a genuine good attack
