Overview of teams performances after 10 games

TEAM M W L PT NRR
DC 2 2 0 4 1.1
RR 2 2 0 4 0.615
RCB 3 2 1 4 -1.45
KXIP 3 1 2 2 1.498
MI 3 1 2 2 0.654
KKR 2 1 1 2 -0.767
CSK 3 1 2 2 -0.84
SRH 2 0 2 0 -0.73

After 10 games, below is how the teams have shaped so far:

1. RR: Has 4 quality overseas players in Smith, Buttler, Stokes (expected to play later on) and Archer, along w/ a talented set of Indian players such as Samson. Bowling is a weakness but can improve esp. as pitches get difficult to bat on. If its top 5-6 players maintain intensity and consistency, it can be the team to beat. Has to be careful of not losing steam and play at its peak when it matters.

2. MI: Overall a strong team with individuals who can win the game from any situation. A team with a good mix of Indian and overseas players. Needs to bowl better, along with being more innovative and proactive on field. As the tournament progresses, could become dangerous if its big hitters strike form. If not, it could wither.

3. DC: Performed well so far. However, what could hold it back is a relative lack of consistency, along w/ a lack of top drawer overseas players esp. in batting. If the core group of Indian players fire, it will be a fun team to watch.

4. K11: A good core of batsmen and bowlers. However, unable to close games. By closing games, I do not mean winning close games but making an impact to bat or bowl the other team out of the game when you have the opportunity (so games do not even become close). In all 3 games, K11 had the opportunity to take the game away from the other team but it did not push the "impact" button to end up failing twice. Since it lost more despite playing its best cricket, it needs to be careful when things do not go its way. If they do not pull off wins when it is inconsistent, it could lose valuable points.

5. RCB: A team that relies on a selected match winners. If the match winners strike form, it can do well. Needs to sort its bowling out and probably bring in Moeen. Also catching needs to improve as it lost and tied games by dropping catches at key moments.

6. KKR: Similar to K11 with a good core of batsmen and bowlers. Needs to perform under pressure. If the core group does well, its chances will improve.

7. CSK: Competitive bowling but batting needs to improve. Would need to identify the batsmen in form and play them in key positions.

8. SRH: A team that lacks depth in both batting and bowling. It is like a person with a short blanket - cover the feet, the head is exposed and vice versa. Probably needs to decide what it needs to strengthen more.

The teams are more closer than what the ranking above (or the points table) would suggest (some of the teams can easily be swapped). Let's see which teams are able to pick up their game or lose steam as the tournament progresses!

Here is my take

  1. KXIP loosing 2 close games can be costly for them. Needs to sought death bowling
  2. RCB are just winning on edge but kohli form will decide their play off chances
  3. DC will make it through, they will become better only
  4. CSK we have seen this before and they have some how made it. Needs to get their batting order right
  5. RR- liked them from day 1 and with 2 wins already without butler n stokes contribution they shud make play offs
  6. KKR- needs to get combination right
  7. MI- their death bowling without malinga, balance without pandya bowling is creating big problems
  8. SRH- needs to get batting order right

Our # 3, 6 & 8 are common .... All teams have areas that need improvements so it could be interesting to see which ones are able to iron them out to make it to the last 4. I would not write anyone off at this point as there is a lot of cricket to be played. Injuries and fatigue factor could change dynamics as well.

also pitches in 2nd half will spin which will help teams like CSK n SRH

few youngsters novelty will wear off

yeah, pitches too .... but they would start impacting in the last 4-5 games of the teams so they still need to do well in their first 9-10 games to have a chance of making the most of "turning" pitches

another factor is experience

Every year KXIP n RR taper of in 2nd half due to experience and teams like MI n CSK go ahead

- KXIP death bowling is the weakest link.
- Just like RCB losing close games will hurt playoff chances.

- CSK might have made comebacks earlier but on experience of Raina, Bhajji etc. you think they will do it this time with Dhoni and Biryani? Doubt it.

- RR looks good as well as DC, my pick for first two teams to go to playoffs.

- KKR or SRH to get the wooden spoon.

- MI will most likely make it definitely, complete team with great batting and bowling

Few team changes suggestions

SRH- fix batting order

  1.  Warner
  2. Bairstrow
  3. Abhishek
  4. Manish
  5. Samad
  6. Nabi/ Allen/ Holder
  7. Rashid
  8. Virat singh
  9. Bhuvi
  10. Khaleel/ Natrajan
  11. Nadeem/Kaul

  • show faith in abhishek n samad
  • Push nabi n rashid up
  • tell manish to hold one end in middle which he anyways wants to and rest they have batting till 9

Few team changes suggestions

KKR- chuck narine , his batting isnt working and bowling has no venom

  1. Gill
  2. Banton
  3. Morgon
  4. Russell
  5. Rana
  6. DK
  7. Cummins
  8. Mavi
  9. Nagarkotti
  10. Varun.C
  11. Kuldeep

  • No matter what send russell after 10 overs
  • DK shud stay at end
  • Keep morgon n Rana to keep Left right going
  • If banton doesnt work get tripathi in and play Lockie or chris green

Experience can definitely help in close or pressure games but if some of these teams win 5-7 of the first 10 games, they can play relatively freely in the last few games

If I am making an 11 based on performances in the first 10 games, below is how it would be:

Agarwal - K11

Samson - RR

Smith - RR (c)

ABDV - RCB

Kishan - MI

Pollard - MI .... PS there are other options as well such as Stonis - DC

Cummins - KKR (bowled and batted well)

Archer - RR (batted and bowled well on the small ground)

Shami - K11

Rabada - DC

Bishnoi  - K11

CSK- fix batting order

  1. Watson
  2. Faf
  3. Curran
  4. Rayudu
  5. Dhoni
  6. Jadhav
  7. Jadeja/ Karn sharma
  8. Thakur
  9. Chahar
  10. Chawla
  11. Hazelwood
  • Let faf n Curran use PP n watson take his time, if watson strucks form he is a clutch player
  • Dhoni now has to bat at 5 ...cnt shy away below
  • Dhoni old formula was having tons of bowling options

This could be a real  possibility .  nearly  7 batsmen & 6 bowlers .  Cummins & Naraine  will  control PP .  Kamlesh/Mavi Naraine , VC & Lockie middle overs   -  Lockie , Dres  &  Cummins death bowling.

Narine batting isnt working, team have found him out. Better go for aggresive opener like banton....if not then go DC way of two overseas fast bowler or even chris green

Also u have 5 overseas player in ur lineup -

Narine

Morgon

Russell

Cummins

Lockie

yea can even play bowler but considering abhishek n samad will play high risk game have an extra batsman .

He ll be a floater who will be used mostly  for collapses

Virat can also be used to maintain right left combo

This is plan A which every team hopes is that their main batsman fire so in that case-

Nabi n rashid are better hitters n they shud go up....

its just 20 overs and the way warner , bairstrow, manish bats they will bat out 10-13 most days easily.....remaning 5-7 overs shud be used top increase tempo .

Plan B is collapse

So virat can go up ...

virat or shankar shud just be backup guy in 20 overs incase of collapse or incase 2 early wkts.

SRH shud have this clear strategy that post 13 overs nabi has to go in , post 15 overs rashid has to go in . If they decide to play fabien allen then virat can go higher....allen is also suited for 5 overs. IF they go for holder then same 13 overs he shud be in

https://www.bcci.tv/videos/136022/-virat-singh-s-patient-76-

he has played at 5.....his role will remain of an anchor only.  How CSK use to play badri only needed in collapse and he can maintain left right. Indian batsman like him will come in play in 2nd half once pitches start to tire.

As i said if wkts fall early send him in or else he can wait for others to do their job

Abhishek shud be used  for PP as he does for Punjab ,  he is someone who can do more damage then virat once set
