Should Jadeja be selected as a batsman in LOI

But who else is there even as a candidate for No 7 batsman and 5th bowler ?

first thing we need distinguish between formats

ODI

  • Jadeja wud be in my plans for 2023 Wc as its in and India and in 2nd half of any big tournament pitches start to turn which is where he becomes lethal plus his fielding
  • but he has to bat at 6 not 7. I made a thread where i showed his batting clicks when he has time in his hands not 5-6 overs. In test there is time and RR expectation is 5-6 which works for him . In ODI his best innings have come whenever he has had 15-25 overs left....take NZ semi innings he can in after 30 overs. At 7 he doesnt work and his s/r of 82 screams that which gets worse in India to 79. We cant have a batsman with 82 s/r batting at 7.....yes he has improved but with 82 s/r u dnt need improvement u need a turnaround and he hasnt become a DK or sky forget a pollard or russell

T20

  • he doesnt know how to bowl in t20, he is predictable and sux badly against lefties so be scared against sides like WI n ENG . Axar , krunal, Sundar,Tewatia all vary pace n length and hence they have been of much more value to their IPL sides then jaddu who every year washes his bad perfomances with 2-3 good ones but those guys are consistent for their franchises
  • Batting again - he needs time in hand, every year he plays such knock ...KKR anyways has been his fav team to do that but this yr he has screwed many games to. Every yr he and dhawan does well in t20 and 1-2 bilateral series but struggles overall . I have seen him bat like monster for gujrat lions in one season where he was one of top 5 six hitter only to disappoint in international cricket.
  • Give me Axar over him who is consistently economical and looks better with bat or Krunal (only overseas since pace in wkts helps his bowling ) who has been a clutch performer . Lets see Tewatia also....this is the time team shud look at different players but unlike everytime we go towards same player who have screwed in past. Go to them once all the options have failed .

In ODI-  yes but only if he bats at 6 not 7

In t20 - anyone but him

But who is that anyone for the upcoming series ?

Axar never does well if someone is bowling 140 k+. Same with Krunal.

Sundar can play pace but his SR is too low for a No.7.

Tewatia can be tried against weaker teams in bilateral T20Is, but not against Australia in Australia.

Most importantly, the 5th bowler is usually a bit weaker in terms of bowling ... but he must be able to hit pace bowlers as the 7th or 6th batsman.

Axar is a better bat then jaddu, his base is far more stable....jadeja's head falls at start of his innings a lot

Krunal and axar are better bowlers then jaddu in t20 ...jadeja doesnt even know how to bowl in t20

They both score over him in bowling and when it comes and batting diff is like not much. In t20 their bowling diff is a lot but batting aint much

his bowling will get more pounded then he ll be able to score

Jadeja international sample of increased s/r is also NIL

Talking about australia is no point as of now coz its selected

jadeja hitting pace also happens when he is in rhythm ...few games jadeja dont get to bat his rhythm goes . This is the most tricky part about batting at 6-7

All this does not really matter. Who is actually hitting the quick bowlers is what needs to be seen.

Is it not based on IPL too ... something which you don't put much importance on when it comes to Jadeja's batting ?

He has not played many LOIs after he has improved his hitting ability.  But there have been a few good innings.

Talking about later is also moot as what happens in Australia would matter a lot regarding subsequent selections.

Jadeja may not be ideal.

But my point is that ... the other candidates are even weaker.

Our perennial problem with a good 7th batsman cum 5th bowler still exists.

I don't understand what is the difference in saying Jadeja should bat at 6 and not 7. I mean if we are four down after 35 overs, obviously Pandya will come to bat higher than Jadeja and this will happen more likely than often.

diff is at a batsman will generally get more overs then 7 , ideally jadeja shud bat at 5 but rahul bats their who is a much more supreme batsman

Pandya shud have gotten a promotion long ago but sadly no one can do the job from ball 1 like him

Yes but shouldn't your best batsmen bat higher? So, Pandya is also better batsmen than Jadeja and better hitter than Jaddu, has potential to bat at 6. In case, we are 4 down by 30 overs then Jadeja can bat higher as he generally need some time to get himself in and can lay up a final 10 overs platform for Pandya to make most of.

sadly that makes jadeja crap , Ideally rohit was also fit for no.4 but he wasnt working there . Jadeja just doesnt work when he has lesser balls but pandya does.

So ill take a scenario where both are best used then one

A longer term solution maybe to prepare Sundar as a big hitter. He SR is low for a number 7 now.

He can use the long lever and hit big 6s ... he is not rushed by 140 k+ pace ... he just needs to practice playing at a high SR and start scoring quickly from the start.

And his bowling is ideal for T20s.

Want to see how Tewatia fares in the coming days too.

Jadeja is averaging 50+ with the ball since start of 2019. Such defensive approaches never ever work. He should be in the ODI squad but should not be a certainty for the 11.

Kohli-Shastri will forever regret breaking the KulCha combo and derailing Kuldeep's career,  just for the sake of strengthening lower order batting.

They had to derail that because Pandya got injured wrong time.

KulCha, Shami and Bumrah all were tailenders and Pandya's replacement was Jadeja only and if he bats at 7, then you need someone who can bat at 8. Ultimately, they gave Thakur a try at that position.

Ofcourse, they cant play with a bottom six  of

6. Jadhav

7. Jadeja/Bhuvi

8. Kuldeep

9. Shami

10. Chahal

11. Bumrah
