The OZ spirit - Border slams Australia A's performance against India, calls it absolute disgrace

Former captain A llan Border on Sunday slammed Australia A's lack of fight in the final session of second day's play in the pink ball warm-up game against India here, calling it an "absolute disgrace".

 

"One of the worst, (most) lethargic performances I have seen in the last session of any cricket," Border said on Fox Cricket.

 

"This is Australia A, they are representing Australia, they are young blokes trying to make their way. That fielding performance, bowling performance, captaincy performance - an absolute disgrace. Not up to scratch at all."

 

Hate them or love them this is why I Love the oz sports ppl. Not sure if Border is trolling but the never say day aggressive attitude is ingrained in every sport and age group they play in.

There was a different article in Aus media moaning and crying about how "shocking" it was that India bowled bouncers at Aus A tailenders.   When in fact it was retaliatory after Bumrah copped a whole bunch of them - Bumrah is our main bowler and if he were to get 'accidentally injured by the Aus A boys, it would just be 'cricket'.   

 

The over-hyping myth of "Aus sports ppl" is often at odds with the actual facts.

You love Oz sports people for their spirit? Go and watch some tennis then, bunch of supertalented youngsters from there throwing toys out of their prams, whining, bitching, crying, making excuses, just cos they ain't willing to put in the hard yards..... da spirit. Sure a great sporting nation once upon a time but not this generation. 

 

Even their cricket spirit is overrated. Bullies in their backyard but have to resort to sandpaper, brainfade referrals, non-funny sledging etc and not just away from comfort zone. And like Sky panel they sure do love to whine about 'in these conditions', tosses, umpiring, weather, crossing the line etc. Most teams share some of these traits sure, anyway Aus is no different. Come out of your complex.

They were super-petulant during the Lillee-Chappell days.  Then, their team got completely decimated by Packer and they had a bunch of regular guys - not spoiled bratty superstars - on the team.  No-names like Hilditch, Wood, Dymock, along with some better known guys like Rodney Hogg, Dav Whatmore and Kim Hughes.  Then Border took over and the team got better.  From everything I saw Border was a tough-as-nails, high-character guy.  No mercy, but no cheating and no petulance.  Then came Steve Waugh's reign and things went to hell again with their behaviors.  Got worse under Ponting, Langer, McGrath and gang.  The legacy is being continued very well now.

See, I don't blame @Bhoot that much for his perception - a lot of younger Indian folks who grew up during the Aussie dominance of early 2000s, tend to be over-awed by the quality gap in that team vs its peers, and mistakenly attribute a lot of false-placed qualities to that team.  Once you 'grow up' and mature as a cricket fan, you move beyond the unnecessary glorification of players.  Good players, even great ones - have their own set of flaws and less than desirable qualities.  People are grey, not black and white as in some kid's cartoon or movie.  I can appreciate Justin Langer as a gritty cricketer who made the most of his talents, as a hard working coach who gives his job 110%, and yet be aware that he was a bratty punk who didn't hesitate to ride the coat-tails of his better teammates, repeatedly acted like an  @sshole on the field, and even tried to cheat at times.  Its ok.  People are allowed to be complex, and have good qualities and bad.  

 

Indian fans of a certain age, tend to over-amplify the weaknesses and 'bad' tendencies of the Indian team, and make presumptions about 'other' teams not having such flaws.  When in fact its not really the case.  

 

Steve Waugh is another guy who gets so much hagiographic nonsense credited to him - not a bad guy, but few realize that he was one of the most selfish cricketers around who did not hesitate at times to put his own career ahead of the team.

Mentally they are 5 year olds, when the going gets tough or when they face stiff resistance from the other side of the net this is what they resort to. I can provide 20 other videos of these talented Aussies doing nothing what the OP describes. One of the biggest puzzles in modern tennis is how these Aussie male players have underachieved so much and why they are so mentally fragile/retarded. Kokkinakkis is supposed to be one of the rare normal ones from that country, yet when things aren't going his way even he puts more faith in his clowning abilities. Must put it down to the culture prevailing in their tennis system.

This generation however spits on that great legacy, deserves only contempt.

Very interesting.  I stopped following tennis regularly a long time ago. 

 

Their cricketers too - they play hard and verbally punch hard, but as soon as someone punches back, they scream victim and the level of their play deteriorates too.  For the longest time, Indian cricketers rolled over and played dead when they copped abuse from the Ozzies (with some Sunny exceptions), but glad that is not the case any more.

 

Am getting psyched for this series.  I just hope India can get off to a flying start - no first test, first day blues please - and play consistently well throughout.
