Pujara performed despite being inseucre. Great players can do that. But its an additional handicap which batters have to face for no reason except their captain's likes and dislikes

Then why he not performed in eng and nz

Pandya played 4 (5?) tests, didn't do * all in anything but one innings. He was one of the reasons why our team composition was bad, as an "A/R" he should have bowled more or we should ideally have picked Jadeja wherever possible!

he is not a top order batsman in tests. thats why I said no.9 and no.10.. if he can bowl more, he should play as a bowler who can bat. If not thakur can play that role

while it is true, our top order didn't cover themselves in glory, they did pretty similar to how English top order did.

Avg 29 vs 31

What really made the difference was the contributions from lower order.. whopping 11 vs 22

The problem is twofold here. Our bowlers and captain don't know what to do when they don't have explicit plans against batsmen i.e., tailenders and our bowlers can't add anything with the bat. We can have one no.11 in the team but 9 and 10 should have pandya/thakur/bhuvi level batsmen. Or maybe Siraj's batting can be further developed since he could swing the bat well in B-G series. We saw that with adequate planning even thakur level bowler can be valuable

See England has batting lineup till number 11, everyone can hold the bat. That is their strength at home to counter that Indian top order has to score more runs as lower order runs are non existtent for India. You want bowlers to do their job which for most part they are doing it, batsmen have to do their job. They have to score more runs it is that  simple. You cannot expect Shami and Ishant to become good batsmen but you can expect our openers and other batsmen to score more runs.

Jadeja and Ashwin will add more value than Jadeja/Ashwin and Pandya.

Yes  ... I would rather have 7 batsmen with high batting averages and 4 bowlers with low bowling averages.

Choosing specialist bowlers for their batting leads to choosing poor bowlers ... and this never works.

If one has a Jadeja ... who averages 49 with bat in the last 4 years ... while having a bowling average of 24 ... that is what balances team.

Spot on, thats why I hate bits and piece players in test cricket. They would lose more matches than they would win matches.

India lost so many chases  during both those  England and SA series. You can crib about team selections, captaincy and what not but ultimately what was different in Gabba test to those lost tests was batsmen were able to chase 300 plus score in fourth innings.

For any chase to happen in fourth innings, one of the openers along with  number3 or number 4 have to score big runs. Indian opening batsmen were just pathetic in those two series along with Pandya's non existent contribution for most part were main reason for the failures.

Gill's role in Gabba test win is more important in my book than Pant.He gave the team confidence to go after the target. Moving forward if Jadeja can bat at number 6 , he would be more valuable than Pandya as he sure can bowl more and help take load off the seamers along with Ashwin.

Jadeja is the reason why we can have 2 spinners play almost every test outside Asia, though Ashwin was a competent bat just till a couple of years back. If he can simply hang on like Sydney he'll do himself & the team a major favor by not having them choose a lesser bowler who can bat a bit more. I've always maintained Jadeja should always be in the team regardless of where we play, the only exception being pitches like the Wanderers & possibly Lord's 2018 where the conditions are almost 100% tailor made for seamers.

Jadeja at 7 allows us to play all sorts of bowling combinations without diluting the quality of the bowling.

3 pacers + 2 spinners

4 pacers + 1 spinner

2 pacers + 3 spinners

based on the pitch.

While some people are disappointed that our fast bowlers can't bat ... their primary role is to bowl.

And they have been exemplary as test match bowlers  ... averaging just 22, over more than 3 years, is no joke. Equally good both home and away.

And our fast bowlers have been the primary reason why we are doing so well in test matches these days.

Yes they are reason why we are competing everywhere , but batsmen are not doing their job. To win and become a great side you need batsmen to deliver too. If current set of batsmen are unable to do the job find  other batsmen who will do the job. But they should not play bits and pieces player to strengthen the batting.
